New York Mets
There's a youth movement afoot in Queens. The mass exodus of pending free agent veterans has left holes all over the field, and young players are jumping at the chance -- for some perhaps their last -- to prove their worth to a team in transition. While none have the pedigree of Amed Rosario or Dominic Smith, some former early-round draft picks are going to become familiar faces over the next 5 weeks. Selected in the first round of the 2011 Draft as a raw center fielder with a good eye at the plate, Brandon Nimmo had the misfortune of being yet another lefty outfielder on a team overflowing with them. The departures of Jay Bruce and Curtis Granderson have left the door wide open, though, and Continue to Article

The Mets' season keeps getting worse as they had another key piece of their starting lineup come out of the game with an injury Friday night. Yoenis Cespedes left Friday's matchup with the Nationals with an apparent leg injury as he came up limping on a Travis D'Arnaud single in the top of the first inning. MASN announcers noted that Cespedes doesn't like the taste of water so the Mets have trouble keeping their star left fielder hydrated during games, so what he could be dealing with could be cramps on a hot night in Washington DC. Things you should know about tonight's game... 1) One day after Michael Conforto was lost for the season, Yoenis Cespedes departed the game in the top of the first with a strained right hamstring while rounding third base. 2) Jacob deGrom took three-hit shutout into the eighth and was ultimately charged with a run on five hits over 7 2/3 innings. The right-hander walked one and struck out 10 and matched his career high with 14 wins. 3) Juan Lagares and Asdrubal Cabrera each drove in a run on two hits. Lagares also stole two bases. Matt Reynolds had an RBI single and Dominic Smith added a sacrifice fly. Brandon Nimmo singled, walked twice, scored two runs and stole a base. 4) AJ Ramos allowed Continue to Article

Mets’ hurler Jacob deGrom pitched himself into the history books on Friday, whiffing 10 of 29 batters over 7 2/3 innings against the Nationals. The strong start was a breath of fresh air for the right-hander, whose win snapped a rough two-game losing streak and marked his ninth start with double-digit strikeouts this season. The penultimate strikeout of deGrom’s outing, a three-pitch knockdown against Michael A. Taylor, placed the pitcher in rare company. He now owns 200 strikeouts on the year (201 following his inning-ending punch-out against Alejandro De Aza) and is one of four Mets’ pitchers with multiple 200-strikeout seasons under his belt, including Tom Seaver (1968-1976), Dwight Gooden Continue to Article

"I just want to get a second opinion," the Phillies pitcher said Friday. Velasquez is on the disabled list and finished for the remainder of the season because of a blood flow issue that has affected his right middle finger  on his pitching hand. Velasquez held his hand in front of him on Friday and invited a reporter to grasp it. Continue to Article
