It was revealed, in the course of a Jerry Reinsdorf interview the other day, that the Chicago Cubs gave Chicago White Sox manager Rick Renteria a World Series ring. Renteria, of course, managed the Cubs for one season — in 2014 — and was fired when Joe Maddon became available after exiting his contract with the Rays. Renteria did an OK job with the Cubs — they were 73-89, which was seven games better than they had been the year before, and in the normal course would never have been fired after that showing — but the thinking by the Cubs front office was that they wanted Maddon, and not Renteria, to be in charge of taking a young and talented team from the land of rebuilding to the land of contention. Kris Bryant’s surprise visit to a Chicago children’s hospital included a sweet marriage proposal. In his relatively short career, Kris Bryant has already established himself as one of MLB’s brightest superstars on the field. More importantly, the Chicago Cubs slugger has also established himself as one of the game’s most genuine and kind-hearted representatives off the diamond. Those attributes were on display again on Wednesday as Bryant, along with his wife, Jess, surprised young patients at Advocate Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill. Ben Zobrist is a self-made player who feels months behind where he should be, freely admitting: “If we were in September right now, I’d be like: ‘Uh-oh.’” The Cubs have played that long game all year, hanging around and slowly moving ahead in the National League Central race, hoping they will peak at the right time and the muscle memory will take over in October. That just seems to be getting harder and harder for their World Series MVP. “We’re still where we need to be,” Zobrist said, “even though I have not played anywhere near my capability this season.” Zobrist is a man of faith, so he will try not to feel snake-bitten, even as the injuries keep piling up, scratched from Monday’s game with Continue to Article

CHICAGO – A number of people may have been caught off guard or even shocked when they awarded Steve Bartman a World Series ring. Now it appears that they’ve given one to the current White Sox manager as well. In a story released Monday by USA Today, White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf reveals that the Cubs gave Rick Renteria a World Series ring after their 2016 championship. The current White Sox manager had the same position for the Cubs during the 2014 season. After a 73-89 record, Renteria was originally told that he would keep his job for the 2015 season but was fired when Joe Maddon became available. “I thought it was pretty classy of them,’’ Reinsdorf said to reporter Bob Nightengale, who Continue to Article
