Philadelphia Phillies
SAN DIEGO — For the second night in a row, a highly touted Phillies prospect belted his first big-league home run. Other highlights were difficult to find in an 8-4 loss to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night (see Instant Replay). The Phillies (43-74) are the worst team in baseball and they looked every bit of it as they were held hitless for the first 4 2/3 innings, had just four hits through the first eight innings, made two errors, misplayed another ball, walked five batters and hit another. The sloppiness began early as work-in-progress leftfielder Rhys Hoskins, in just his sixth big-league game at the position, misplayed a catchable ball that would have ended the first inning into an RBI double. After spending six weeks with the Class A Short Season Williamsport Crosscutters, Phillies first-round pick Adam Haseley has been promoted to Lakewood. Haseley, the eighth overall pick in June's draft, hit .270/.350/.380 in 37 games with nine doubles, two homers and 18 RBIs in 158 plate appearances. Haseley played center field every day for Williamsport. Continue to Article

Phillies (43-72) at Padres (51-66) 10:10 p.m. on CSN; streaming live on CSNPhilly.com and the NBC Sports App The Phillies are on the West Coast this week for seven games in two different pitcher-friendly ballparks.  The teams they'll face this week, the Padres and Giants, are 15 and 25 games under .500, respectively. First up is San Diego, which has lost 8 of 11. 1. First knock out of the way Rhys Hoskins picked up his first major-league hit and first RBI Sunday in his fourth game. Hoskins started his major-league career 0 for 12, the longest hitless streak by a Phillie to begin his career since Chris Coste went 0 for 12 in 2006. Prior to that, you have to go all the way back to Lonnie Smith Continue to Article

When you're 29 games under .500, a baserunning blunder in the fifth inning of a game you're already trailing by three runs is frustrating in the moment but forgotten within days. But the Phillies aren't playing for right now, they're attempting to build habits and skills for the future, when baserunning mistakes in the fifth inning of a game actually will matter. Odubel Herrera made a poor decision in Sunday's 6-2 loss, attempting to tag up from second to third base on a flyball to medium-deep center field by Nick Williams (see Instant Replay). Herrera's mistake was that he did not look at his third base coach or the runner ahead of him. If he did, he would have seen that Juan Samuel had Freddy Continue to Article

A couple of weeks of pregame outfield workouts and three games in the outfield at the Triple A level were enough to convince Phillies management to give Hoskins, a natural first baseman, a look in the outfield. "For Hoskins, we've talked about it all year," general manager Matt Klentak said, "his performance needs to meet up with the opportunity. Hoskins, 24, more than proved his readiness with the bat.
