When Bryce Harper writhed in pain on the field and clutched at his left knee and then didn't put weight on his left leg as he was helped off, the possibility of a career-altering injury seemed realistic. General manager Mike Rizzo said Harper has a ''significant'' bone bruise in his left knee but avoided the kind of ligament or tendon damage that would have put a pin in the team's World Series aspirations. Bryce Harper does not have any ligament or tendon damage in his injured left knee, but the Washington Nationals All-Star will be out indefinitely because of a significant bone bruise. The Nationals are optimistic that Harper will return at some point this season, general manager Mike Rizzo said Sunday. "We dodged a bullet here," said Rizzo, adding that it was "pretty remarkable" that Harper avoided a more significant injury. "The bone bruise is something of significance, and we're going to treat him cautiously and hopefully have him back later on this season," Rizzo said.
