Don Baylor, the burly slugger who once held the Major League Baseball record for being hit a pitch and later guided the expansion Colorado Rockies to the playoffs for the first time as manager of the year, died Monday of cancer. The 1979 American League MVP died in his hometown of Austin, Texas, after a 14-year battle with multiple myeloma, Baylor's family said in a statement released by the Angels, the franchise for which he played more than 800 games. ''Don passed from this earth with the same fierce dignity with which he played the game and lived his life,'' Baylor's wife, Rebecca, said. Continue to Article

Former Philadelphia Phillies catcher Darren Daulton has died after a four-year battle with brain cancer, the team announced. Daulton, nicknamed “Dutch,” spent 14 seasons as the Phillies’ catcher. Daulton finished seventh in MVP voting in 1993 and helped propel the Phillies to the World Series, where they lost in six games to the Toronto Blue Jays. Continue to Article

The departures of Addison Reed and Lucas Duda, and the arrival of Amed Rosario, signaled the end of the 2017 Mets. The team is now playing for next year -- preparing for a significant team turnover and hopefully beginning to answer some important questions.  What will the infield look like in 2018? Part of that has been settled. Rosario is, deservedly, beginning his tenure as the Mets' starting shortstop, and Dominic Smith's inauguration as first baseman is only a matter of time. Duda's trade indicated that any doubt as to Smith's readiness is gone and even slow starts to their respective MLB careers will not take him or Rosario out of the 2018 Opening Day lineup. As settled as shortstop and Continue to Article

DENVER — The Phillies lost their fourth straight game on their current road trip, and reliever Luis Garcia lost his second in as many nights Friday when he yielded a run in the eighth that gave the Colorado Rockies a 4-3 win.   Garcia began the eighth by walking pinch-hitter Pat Valaika, who took second on catcher Cameron Rupp’s passed ball. With two outs, Garcia intentionally walked left-handed hitting Charlie Blackmon to get to DJ LeMahieu, a right-handed hitter.   LeMahieu bounced a go-ahead single to right, sending the Phillies to their major-league-leading 28th one-run loss against 14 such victories. Nolan Arenado tied the game at 3-3 when he belted his 25th home run in the seventh after Continue to Article

Cleveland Indians
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Indians added another bat to the roster Saturday, recalling outfielder Abraham Almonte from Triple-A Columbus and sending pitcher Adam Plutko back to the Clippers. Almonte has played in 44 games for the Indians this season, batting .244 with three home runs and 10 RBI. Plutko has been up and down twice this season with the Indians, but has yet to pitch. He made two appearances with the Tribe last year. Almonte opened the season with the Indians, but has been to Columbus twice this season. He's hitting .269 (18-for-67) with six doubles, two homers and five RBI with the Clippers. On May 16, he was placed on the disabled list with right biceps tendinitis. He was Continue to Article
