Don Baylor, the first man to ever manage the upstart Colorado Rockies, and a former AL MVP and World Series winner, died early Monday morning at 68. Baylor was a native of Austin, Texas, and broke barriers as a high school athlete. After he graduated, he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1967, which started Baylor’s long career in baseball. Baltimore Orioles
If everything was going perfectly for the Orioles, all of their players would play well and play for as many seasons as the Orioles want them to. Unfortunately, things aren’t quite that easy, which has put the O’s in a tough place with a couple of long-time Orioles: Chris Tillman and the still-injured J.J. Hardy. Chris Tillman With Tillman, the Orioles have already done what they were avoiding for months. He was officially in the bullpen on Sunday afternoon, and it seems like there he will remain, though he has never pitched in relief at the MLB level and only has six relief outings in the entirety of his professional career, dating back to 2006. It’s not the outcome that anybody would have wanted. Continue to Article

Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles put on their own version of the MLB Home Run Derby on Sunday afternoon, and because there was an actual game happening, the result was very bad for the other team. The O’s ended up totaling 12 runs, seven of which scored over five home runs early in the game. The Tigers managed only a single homer, scoring three runs total. Welcome to August baseball at OPACY. Ubaldo Jimenez did his part, allowing nearly every Tiger he faced to reach base, but only allowing one to actually cross the plate. Ubaldo allowed 12 base runners in all, and ultimately finished the game with an odd final line of 5.2IP, 9H, 1ER, 3BB, 6SO. It’s raining dongs! Hallelujaaaah! Anibal Sanchez has not been particularly Continue to Article

Baltimore Orioles
For a brief period of time, things appeared to be going well for the Orioles. Five wins in a row, taking games out of the second wild card-holding Royals, good starting pitching, an offense that was doing well enough to get the job done. Baseball seems so much easier when your starting rotation isn’t pitching like the worst rotation in the league. That happy little interruption of a dismal season has been halted for the moment. Between the bad pitching of Chris Tillman on Thursday night, with Tillman now seeming to be demoted to the bullpen, to a bad luck and mistake-laden loss on Friday night that saw the usually-reliable Mychal Givens blow it big time, the O’s are now again three games below Continue to Article

Baltimore Orioles
When we think of significant Oriole contracts set to expire after the 2018 season, the two that immediately come to mind belong to Manny Machado and Zach Britton. However, two others set to end after next year are likely even more essential to the future of the team – those belonging to Dan Duquette and Buck Showalter. Both joined the organization in 2011, signing extensions after the 2012 season and the team’s first playoff appearance since 1997. The Orioles’ brain trust was set for the next six seasons and was expected to provide the personnel and management to lead to even greater things. After all, with a talented core of players like Machado, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Chris Tillman and Continue to Article
