Chicago Cubs
CHICAGO -- Matt Wieters hit a tiebreaking grand slam off Carl Edwards Jr. in Washington's five-run eighth inning, helping the Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 9-4 on Sunday. Bryce Harper started the winning rally with a one-out infield single against Mike Montgomery. Ryan Zimmerman doubled against Edwards and Daniel Murphy was walked intentionally to load the bases. Washington then grabbed control in a span of two pitches. Edwards (3-3) hit Anthony Rendon, tying it at 4, and Wieters followed with a drive over the wall in center for his third career grand slam. Wieters drove in five runs and Rendon also had an RBI double for the NL East-leading Nationals, who had dropped three of four. Brian Goodwin Continue to Article

Chicago Cubs
After splitting their first six games, the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs wrap up their regular season series this afternoon in Wrigley Field. Erick Fedde is on the mound for the Nationals vs the Cubs Jon Lester in the third of three in the Windy City at 2:20 PM EDT. What have we learned about the teams through the first six games? Who knows, that’s a question for someone with analytical skills and a lot of time on their hands. What we can tell you is that we learned yesterday that Matt Wieters does not curse. At least that’s what Dusty Baker said when he was asked about the veteran catcher’s late-game ejection in the second game of three in Chicago. Wieters was apparently tossed for arguing Continue to Article

Chicago Cubs
Chicago’s Cubs have been hitting the ball out of the yard fairly consistently recently, with 48 home runs over the last month-plus, leading the NL in homers since July 1st, and their catcher, Wilson Contreras, started the second of three with the Washington Nationals in Wrigley Field with the second-most HRs amongst major league catchers. Alex Avila and Contreras added to those totals, with the new Cubs’ catcher’s two-run blast in the first putting the home team up 4-1, and Contreras took Nats’ left-hander Matt Grace deep in the bottom of the sixth for his 19th of 2017, a two-run blast that made it a 6-3 game after the Nats rallied to get within one. John Lackey and Edwin Jackson, today’s starters, Continue to Article

Chicago Cubs
“We have to win,” Dusty Baker told reporters before the start of the Washington Nationals’ three-game set with the Chicago Cubs in Wrigley Field. “We’re in a little bit better position than they are right now, cause if it ended right now, which it’s not gonna, Milwaukee is still a game and a half out, they’re still right on the Cubs. So, it’s important for them, and it’s important for us to get our guys back, cause we’re missing a lot of front line players, so our second line of defense, they’ve been playing very well, but you still want your front line players back.” Jayson Werth is still working his way back. Trea Turner is on the mend, though still not close. Michael A. Taylor is rehabbing Continue to Article
