ARLINGTON, Texas -- Adrian Beltre doubled for his 3,000th career hit Sunday, reaching the milestone in the Texas Rangers' 10-6 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. The Rangers already were down 4-0 when the 38-year-old third baseman, who went 1 for 5 in his 2,771st game, had a hard hit down the line past third base in the fourth inning. Beltre became the first player from the Dominican Republic, and 31st overall, to join the 3,000-hit club in the major leagues. Continue to Article

My colleague Mark Brown details the O’s victory Saturday night in Arlington, Texas. Gausman was brilliant, the best he’s ever been in a MLB game, and the Birds are now 49-54. Looking at the standings, Baltimore is 7.5 out of first place in the AL East and 5.5 behind the Wild Card. “Gausman came within one out of the Orioles’ first complete-game shutout since Miguel Gonzalez against Cincinnati on Sept. 3, 2014.” This is a story you don’t read every day. Thankfully, everyone appears to be okay. “Orioles manager Buck Showalter said that Hellickson is doing fine and has been in contact with Baltimore's staff but had to go with his girlfriend to the emergency room following the car accident. Showalter Continue to Article

MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli reports that Orioles’ right-hander Jeremy Hellickson was involved in a minor car accident while driving to the airport on Saturday. The details have yet to be released by the club, but Hellickson appears to be fine and will fly out to Baltimore on Sunday after tending to his girlfriend in the emergency room. The 30-year-old righty was acquired by the Orioles on Friday in a trade that sent outfielder Hyun Soo Kim and left-hander Garrett Cleavinger to the Phillies. He’ll help bolster a weakened pitching staff as the team makes a push for the postseason and could debut sometime during Baltimore’s upcoming seven-game homestand against the Royals and Tigers. Ghiroli adds Continue to Article

As much as we might swoon over home runs that travel over 450 feet or explode off the bat at 121 mph, distance and speed really aren’t the only things that matter when it comes to home runs. Case in point, Kansas City Royals slugger Lorenzo Cain managed to tuck a three-run home run just inside Pesky Pole during Saturday’s game at Fenway Park. The exit velocity was 90 mph and the distance was a mere 302 feet, which according to some calculations defied the odds. Continue to Article

If nothing else, the Phillies’ 4-3 victory over Atlanta on Saturday night showed why you keep a guy like Ty Kelly around. And, perhaps, why you keep a guy like Odubel Herrera around. Kelly, a veteran utilityman, won the game with an RBI single in the 11th (see Instant Replay), but Herrera, benched earlier in the week by manager Pete Mackanin for not running out a called third strike, flashed the kind of ability that makes him such an intriguing player, despite his periodic lapses. He tied the game with a ninth-inning solo homer off Braves closer Jim Johnson, drove in another run with a single, went 3-for-4 and reached base four times. So while there might still be fans clamoring for him to be Continue to Article
