Oakland Athletics
OAKLAND — Even when buried in the American League West standings, the A’s remain one of the majors’ most intriguing stories this time of year. Multiple reports surfaced Saturday that the Yankees had emerged as the front runners to acquire Oakland starter Sonny Gray, with the New York Post suggesting a deal could materialize by Sunday. That doesn’t mean the A’s aren’t talking to other clubs about the prized right-hander, who is resembling his All-Star form of 2015 and comes with two years of team control beyond this year, making him the most talked-about trade chip in the majors as Monday’s 1 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline draws near. But the Yankees clearly are the front-runners. Before Saturday Continue to Article

Oakland Athletics
The Oakland Athletics have pushed back Sonny Gray's next scheduled start until after Monday afternoon's trade deadline. Gray has been the subject of much trade speculation. He was supposed to pitch Sunday against Minnesota, but now is set to throw against San Francisco on Monday night. That game would be hours after teams must conclude any deals without waivers. The move is ostensibly to give the 27-year-old right-hander, along with the rest of the A's starting rotation, an extra rest day that organization believes pitchers need. Gray is 6-5 with a 3.43 ERA. He's 4-2 with a 1.38 ERA over his last six starts. "At this point in time in the season, there's some wear and tear involved and you just Continue to Article

Minnesota Twins
The Arizona Diamondbacks have announced that they’ve acquired minor league catcher John Ryan Murphy from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor league pitcher Gabriel Moya. Murphy has played in 141 major league games across four seasons, three with the Yankees, one with Minnesota. He has spent the entire 2017 season at Triple-A, hitting .222/.298/.330 with four home runs and 27 RBI over 59 games. Which is not significantly different than what he did in the bigs. He’s 26 and will serve as organizational depth for Arizona. Moya is a 22 year-old lefty who has been the closer for the Dbacks’ Double-A team. He’s had a fantastic 2017 season, posting a 0.82 ERA and a 68/12 K/BB ratio in 43.2 innings. Continue to Article

Oakland Athletics
Having acquired relievers Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson from the Oakland Athletics, Washington Nationals’ GM Mike Rizzo told 106.7 the FAN in D.C.’s The Sports Junkies last Wednesday that while he would continue to consider potential improvements to the bullpen, most of the “heavy lifting” was done after the latest in a long line of deals with the A’s. “I think that we’ve done most of our heavy lifting for the trade deadline,” Rizzo said, “but that’s not to say that if there’s a value that we feel can help us that we wouldn’t be aggressive like we always are and attack that and try to improve ourselves.” In the immediate aftermath of the trade with the A’s, Joe Frisaro, who covers Miami at MLB.com, Continue to Article
