The White Sox got close enough to a potential Jose Quintana deal that they almost pulled their ace from his July 8 start at Coors Field. The next day, Theo Epstein got a text message from White Sox general manager Rick Hahn, suddenly reviving a trade discussion the Cubs president assumed was dead after a post-draft check-in that sounded like a formality in June. The New York Yankees at one point felt close to landing Quintana, the minor-league free agent who left them after the 2011 season and then blossomed into an All-Star on the South Side. We know computers hate the Orioles, and national broadcasters hate the Orioles, but do the folks who make power polls/rankings hate the Orioles? They seemed to like the results against the Rangers, that’s for sure. MLB.com (19th; LW: N/A) Alyson Footer at MLB.com only does a Top 20. And a sweep of Texas was good enough to get the Orioles back in at #19. And apologies for not referencing Footer’s name until this week. No idea why I omitted that. Sorry! Bleacher Report Power Rankings (19th; LW: 25th) Joel Reuter must have really liked that sweep against Texas, as he lifts the Orioles six slots. CBS Sports (21st; LW: 25th) Matt Synder lifts the O’s four slots. “They've won six of nine (before Wednesday’s Continue to Article

Baltimore Orioles
Hello, friends. Another day has dawned with the Orioles in fourth place in the American League East. The day also finds the team six games out of a wild card spot, with six teams to pass. That would be just in order to claim the road spot, which they made so much of last season. The Orioles fell to that point after losing their series to the Rays, with a 5-1 loss on Wednesday afternoon. If you didn't see it, check out my recap of the game in which Ubaldo Jimenez actually pitched well but the offense didn't get anything done and so they lost. They probably have to win 60% of their games from here on out. All of that sounds like the Orioles should be sellers at the deadline, doesn't it? Too bad Continue to Article

Texas Rangers
The Miami Marlins pummelled the Texas Rangers 22-10 on Wednesday in what may have been Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish's last outing in a Rangers uniform. Miami broke down Darvish in a nine-run fourth inning. All nine starters in the Marlins' lineup had at least one hit and one run-batted-in in an offensive onslaught that produced a club record for runs and a season high for hits (22). Continue to Article

Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles, after Wednesday afternoon's loss to the Rays, are now five games below .500 and five games out of a wild card spot. It is increasingly more difficult to imagine their path to the postseason. Despite this, the Orioles remain ready to "go either way" prior to the trade deadline, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. This is not exactly a new development on its own. This back-and-forth indecisiveness has been a theme in the reporting on the Orioles thinking through July. Neither is another detail about the Orioles included by Crasnick: That the chances of trading closer Zach Britton are growing "slimmer by the day," with a market for Britton not having developed the way that the Orioles Continue to Article
