In addition, contributor Tim Lane placed first in the illustration category for a drawing that depicted the on-campus escort scene on college campuses. “This illustration draws inspiration from 1950s pulp magazine covers which is a smart approach for a 'scandalous’ story like Sugar U,” the judge wrote. “The artist captures the pulp style well with lurid colors and shocked/disapproving passersby watching the coed and sugar daddy with mouths agape.” Arts and Music Editor Becky Bartkowski placed first in the arts reporting category for her series “100 Creatives,” an entry the judge called “smart and essential.” Bartkowski also placed second in arts criticism. He has injury history, but has been healthy this year while putting up a 4.30 ERA in Continue to Article

Heading into Sunday’s series finale in Arizona, Washington Nationals’ lefty Matt Grace had a 3.22 ERA in 22 1⁄3 innings pitched on the season with nine walks (3.63 BB/9), 14 Ks (5.64 K/9), and a .250/.333/.300 line against. Grace, 28, and up for his third stint of the season in the bullpen, had a solid stretch of 15 2⁄3 IP going before the third of three with the Diamondbacks in Chase Field, having posted 2.87 ERA, seven walks (4.02 BB/9), 13 Ks (7.47 K/9), and a .255/.349/.327 line against over that stretch, and a 1.00 ERA, five walks (5.00 BB/9), nine Ks (9.00 K/9) and a .172/.294/.276 line against in nine innings pitched in July. “He’s gotten outs and he gets ground balls,” Dusty Baker said after the first of Grace’s two saves in two games in Cincinnati.
