Aaron Judge met all expectations in his Target Field debut on Monday, blasting one pitch into the third deck in left-center field, and smacking another far over the wall in right-center. So much for batting practice. During the game, however, a player nine inches shorter and 100 pounds lighter had a far greater impact than the league’s superstar rookie. Pinch hitter Eduardo Escobar, engaged in his fourth annual tug-of-war for playing time, turned on a changeup, lined it into left field, and delivered the go-ahead run in the Twins’ 4-2 victory over the Yankees. “His production’s been good, given the time he gets to play,” said Twins manager Paul Molitor, who lately has juggled three different Continue to Article

New York Yankees first baseman Greg Bird will undergo surgery on his right ankle and will miss at least six weeks, manager Joe Girardi told reporters on Monday. While it is likely Bird will miss the rest of the season, Girardi added he could resume baseball activity in September. Bird had been shut down since May 1 after he went on the disabled list with what was diagnosed then as a bone bruise, however it did not heal the way the team thought it would, so Bird saw additional specialists. Amid reports that questioned Bird's willingness to play with the team because he had missed so much time, Bird said, "For me, I'm doing everything I can to come back. I love [baseball] and I want to be playing Continue to Article

Red Sox manager John Farrell says Major League Baseball has denied Boston's protest over a bizarre play on the bases last weekend involving Matt Holliday of the New York Yankees. Farrell said he wasn't surprised the protest was denied, but disappointed that the play couldn't be reviewed. He spoke before the AL East-leading Red Sox hosted Toronto on Monday. The Red Sox wanted an interference call Saturday in the 11th inning of a game they lost 4-1 in 16 innings at Fenway Park. Holliday retreated toward first base after forced out at second on a grounder, sliding back into the bag as the throw came to first baseman Mitch Moreland. The throw hit Ellsbury and bounced into foul territory. Ellsbury Continue to Article

Yankees RHP Michael Pineda will undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday in Cincinnati, the team announced. Pineda had his right UCL injury examined by Reds Medical Director Dr. Timothy Kremchek on Monday, with Kremchek agreeing with the initial recommandation of Tommy John surgery. Pineda was placed on the 10-day DL on Friday, but wanted a second opinion before deciding whether to have the surgery, which will mean a recovery time of 12-to-18 months. The 28-year-old Pineda posted a 4.39 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with 92 strikeouts and 21 walks in 96 1/3 innings (17 starts) this season. He gave up five runs (including three home runs) in 3.0 innings during his last start. He is earning $7.4 million this Continue to Article
