Chicago Cubs
BALTIMORE — Is it too soon to say the Cubs won the Jose Quintana trade? Maybe. But Quintana’s dominant debut with the Cubs on Sunday against the Orioles finally gave them a tangible reason to think their rotation might have enough in the second half to have a chance to chase down the first-place Brewers in the National League Central. ‘‘It can really be a big boon to us,’’ manager Joe Maddon said after Quintana’s 8-0 victory gave the Cubs a three-game sweep to open their post-All-Star-break schedule. With fans holding up ‘‘Welcome’’ signs and Colombian flags, the left-handed Quintana was overpowering in his first start since the Cubs acquired him from the White Sox in a five-player deal Thursday. Chicago Cubs
BALTIMORE – As much as the crosstown Jose Quintana trade stunned the baseball world, the full ripple effect won’t be known for years. The Cubs now have another All-Star lefty to pair with Jon Lester through 2020 and team president Theo Epstein is already thinking about how Quintana’s team-friendly contract could create the payroll space to add another superstar and build a dynasty on the North Side. We don’t even really know how good Quintana can be after spending almost his entire career on bad White Sox teams, never pitching in the playoffs and getting most of his exposure through MLB Trade Rumors.  But this is exactly what Epstein envisioned when he gave up two blue-chip prospects in last Continue to Article

Atlanta Braves
BALTIMORE Joe Maddon says the Cubs arent discussing the idea of moving John Lackey to the bullpen: Were not there yet. A manager who has known Lackeys quirks and competitiveness ever since he was a rookie with the 2002 Anaheim Angels still gave the vote of confidence before Jose Quintanas Cubs debut on Sunday afternoon at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The Cubs shut down Lackey (5-9, 5.20 ERA) before the All-Star break because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot and plan to activate him from the disabled list on Tuesday and start him against the Atlanta Braves that night. Chicago Cubs
BALTIMORE – Jon Lester decided to sign with a last-place Cubs team during the 2014 winter meetings, taking a leap of faith while still expecting to be in the pennant race every season on that six-year, $155 million megadeal. As much as anyone in the clubhouse, Lester understands how team president Theo Epstein operates and what a huge hole there will be in the rotation if/when Jake Arrieta and John Lackey leave as free agents after this season. That’s why “until 2020” jumped out at Lester after the initial shock from the blockbuster Jose Quintana trade with the White Sox wore off quickly. “I know Theo,” Lester said before watching Arrieta shut down his old team during Saturday’s 10-3 win at Oriole Continue to Article
