Chicago Cubs
If you’re a Cubs fan, you won’t be watching the 2017 All-Star Game with quite the enthusiasm as you did the 2016 game. Closer Wade Davis is having a fine season (16 saves, 1.93 ERA) and deserves his spot on the team. But he was in the American League the last eight seasons, and his World Series championship came with the Royals in 2015, not the Cubs in 2016. So where are the rest of the guys? There were seven Cubs in the All-Star Game last season, including the entire National League starting infield. There was so much Cubs love out there that all Wrigley Field beer vendors might have been voted in were that position available. Third baseman Kris Bryant, the NL’s most valuable player last season, Continue to Article

OAKLAND, Calif. — Manager Rick Renteria has used seven leadoff men in the White Sox’ first 83 games. Third baseman Todd Frazier wants to be No. 8. ‘‘I would love to,’’ Frazier said. Leury Garcia (20 times), Tim Anderson (19), Tyler Saladino (16), Yolmer Sanchez (eight), Alen Hanson (eight), Melky Cabrera (seven) and Adam Engel (five) all have batted first, but Frazier has not. He might not be the worst option. His batting average is low (.214), but he sees a lot of pitches, and his 43 walks have kept his on-base percentage at a respectable .332. Frazier led off a Little League World Series championship game with a home run and led off through high school and college, he said. He had 20, 13 and Continue to Article

The Cubs didn’t dial up Kyle Schwarber to create some Fourth of July fireworks, keeping their World Series legend in the minors as Triple-A Iowa moved on to Oklahoma City. But Schwarber Watch is on alert, with farm director Jaron Madison saying “it’s not out of the question” the left-handed slugger could rejoin the Cubs before the All-Star break, though that final decision rests with team president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer. “He’s feeling really good,” Madison said Tuesday at Wrigley Field after returning from a trip to Des Moines. “His swing’s way more balanced. He feels like he’s pretty close to where he wants to be. And I wouldn’t expect it to be too much longer, but he still Continue to Article

Wearing his new Toronto Blue Jays jersey, Miguel Montero wanted to put his petulant parting from the Chicago Cubs behind him. The denouement of Montero's time with the World Series champions transpired quickly. Chicago agreed to pay Toronto $6,446,710 to cover all but about $500,000 of the roughly $7 million remaining of Montero's $14 million salary this year. Continue to Article

Chicago Cubs
The July 31 trade deadline looks like the next last resort for a 41-42 Cubs team that already promoted a top prospect (Ian Happ), experimented with the greatest leadoff hitter of all-time (Anthony Rizzo), demoted a World Series legend to Triple-A Iowa (Kyle Schwarber) and dumped a mouthy veteran catcher (Miguel Montero), desperately trying to weather injuries and shake up the defending World Series champs. “You can always use a boost,” Jon Lester said after a Fourth of July loss to the Tampa Bay Rays left him shrugging his shoulders in the Wrigley Field interview room, running low on answers to the same state-of-the-team questions. Chris Archer is the one who got away, traded to the Rays after the 2011 season and blossoming into exactly the kind of top-of-the-rotation starter the Cubs need now. Continue to Article
