KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Mike Moustakas hit his 22nd home run and Alex Gordon connected for a three-run shot as the Kansas City Royals rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat the Minnesota Twins 11-6 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader Saturday. Moustakas tied his season high for home runs and matched Jermaine Dye in 2000 for the club record before the All-Star Game. Alcides Escobar and Brandon Moss, with an estimated 474-foot drive to straightaway center, also homered for the Royals. Salvador Perez hit a two-out, two-run single in a three-run seventh to snap a 6-all tie against Tyler Duffy Continue to Article

Mariners' left-hander Drew Smyly will undergo Tommy John surgery after being diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Smyly had been rehabbing in the hopes of returning after the All-Star break but Seattle manager Scott Servais said Smyly came out of his last simulated game not feeling great and additional exams revealed the need for surgery. The operation is scheduled for Continue to Article

Seattle Mariners
Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports that Mariners starter Drew Smyly has a torn UCL and will undergo Tommy John surgery. The Mariners called it “a little setback.” A reexamination shows that this is not little, obviously. The Mariners acquired Smyly in January for outfielder Mallex Smith and two minor leaguers, and were expected to utilize the lefty as a core member of their rotation in 2017. Continue to Article

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — What a throw! Independence, Mo. native, Truman High School graduate, and Oklahoma junior pitcher Paige Parker had a childhood dream come true when she was asked to throw out the first pitch before a Kansas City Royals game last week. Parker's softball team - the Oklahoma Sooners - had just won the Women's College World Series when the Royals asked if she'd be interested in throwing out a first pitch. While warming up for the big moment - the some of the players, including Salvador Perez, Mike Moustakas, Eric Hosmer, Whit Merrifield, and Drew Butera wanted to see some of her actual pitches, so Paige said she started throwing harder. Those pitches caught Royals catcher Drew Butera Continue to Article
