Mariners' left-hander Drew Smyly will undergo Tommy John surgery after being diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Seattle announced the diagnosis on Wednesday, ending Smyly's hopes of returning this season. Smyly had been on the disabled list since opening day with a flexor strain in his left arm, an injury that occured in spring training after one outing after he pitched for the United States during the World Baseball Classic. Smyly had been rehabbing in the hopes of returning after the All-Star break but Seattle manager Scott Servais said Smyly came out of his last simulated game not feeling great and additional exams revealed the need for surgery. Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports that Mariners starter Drew Smyly has a torn UCL and will undergo Tommy John surgery. In a two-game span, Jean Segura spent 14 innings at shortstop for the Tacoma Rainiers waiting for a ball to come his way. One never did. Unable make an impact defensively, Segura showed his readiness to return to the Seattle Mariners with a pain-free performance Tuesday. He finished 1-for-5 with a run scored and two strikeouts in his second rehab start at Cheney Stadium after suffering a high sprain in his right ankle June 1. He also grounded into a double play in the fifth. Before the game, Rainiers manager Pat Listach said there’s “no doubt,” Segura could return to the Mariners this weekend if he exhibited comfort and progress. “It’s not going to be based on how many hits he gets,” Listach Continue to Article

Last night we had an ugly game in Minnesota as the Twins blasted the Seattle Mariners, 20-7. While it’s always fun to read the box scores after one of these things, there isn’t much that can salvage an ugly game as it’s happening. Last night M’s manager Scott Servais called on his backup catcher: Carlos Ruiz. Continue to Article
