Chicago Cubs
Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon says this season is like learning to swim, with his team hoping to tread water until several key players return from the disabled list. The Cubs wasted a fine pitching performance by Mike Montgomery, stranding 11 runners and allowing three unearned runs to lose to the Miami Marlins, 4-2. Chicago also lost shortstop Addison Russell , who departed in the fourth inning. Continue to Article

Washington Nationals
WASHINGTON – Less than six months after the Cubs toured the White House as one of the final stops on their World Series victory tour, manager Joe Maddon is angling for another visit to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Maddon’s childhood friend from Hazleton, Congressman Lou Barletta, is working to arrange a private tour this week while the Cubs are in Washington for a four-game showdown against the first-place Nationals. “I’m staying in touch with my boy Louie,” Maddon said Monday. “Who knows? We might end up going over there again.” This wouldn’t be the East Room spectacle the Cubs enjoyed in January, when President Barack Obama’s final official White House event became a kind of farewell gift to his Continue to Article

Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs wasted a fine pitching performance by Mike Montgomery, stranding 11 runners and allowing three unearned runs to lose Sunday to the Miami Marlins, 4-2. Edinson Volquez (4-8) gave up five hits and five walks in five innings, but he stranded eight runners and departed with a 3-2 lead. Miami's Ichiro Suzuki, 43, became the oldest player to start in center field since at least 1900, surpassing Rickey Henderson. Suzuki batted leadoff for the first time this year and went 0 for 4, dropping his average to .200. Giancarlo Stanton hit his 20th homer for Miami, a solo shot off reliever Pedro Strop in the seventh. Chicago Cubs
MIAMI – Injuries keep weighing the Cubs down as the defending World Series champs keep trying to finally take off this season. The right shoulder that has been bothering Addison Russell off and on since at least spring training grounded the All-Star shortstop during Sunday’s 4-2 loss at Marlins Park, exiting with what he described as a “sharp, pinching pain.”        “I definitely know when I can go and when I need to shut it down,” Russell said. “There’s a difference between whenever you’re trying to work through something or you’re working against something. “I don’t think that there’s anything wrong with my shoulder. But I definitely want to make sure, so I have that (peace of) mind.” Russell Continue to Article

Chicago Cubs
In a week that could have been their unofficial demise, the Miami Marlins remained very much alive. They beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-2, on Sunday for a series split with the defending World Series champions, who drew the bulk of the nearly 100,000 fans who showed up to Marlins Park for the four games. Miami’s 4-3 week began with a series victory over the Washington Nationals, the runaway NL East leaders, squeaking out two wins in three games to open this critical homestand. The Marlins remain far behind in the playoff picture — double-digit games back in the division and wild-card races — but with a degree of sticktoitiveness that they lacked in May, they are treading water as June nears its close.
