Boston Red Sox
Red Sox manager John Farrell and veteran umpire Bill Miller took disagreeing up a few notches on Saturday night, engaging in an intense and perhaps even uncomfortable exchange that ultimately led to Farrell’s ejection and accusations of physical contact. It had already been a frustrating night for the Red Sox when reliever Fernando Abad was called for a balk with a runner on third base in the seventh inning. Farrell kept going anyway, perhaps thinking there would be wiggle room given the circumstances. Continue to Article

Boston Red Sox
BOSTON — David Price and Rick Porcello showed improvement on back-to-back nights Friday and Saturday, important signs for the Red Sox after a difficult month for both pitchers prior to this homestand. Price on Saturday night went six innings and allowed three runs, two earned, in a 6-3 loss to the Angels. He fanned five and his velocity has been consistently better this year than last year. But the most important number was his walk total: one. He walked three batters in his previous start, and four in both of his starts prior. “Two outings ago, the first start here in Fenway,” Sox manager John Farrell said. “There was better timing in his delivery and overall better separation over the rubber. The lights at CHS Field did not explode and shower Kevin Millar with sparks Saturday night as he rounded the bases for a Hollywood home run only this 45-year-old idiot and New England folk hero could naturally appreciate. Facing his first live pitching in seven years, Millar belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, bringing awestruck fans to their feet and his teammates-for-a-night to their knees in unworthy worship. “You’ve got to be kidding!” starting pitcher Mark Hamburger barked as Millar smiled through his gray goatee and ran a gantlet of head slaps and sunflower seeds in the Saints dugout. Boston Red Sox
BOSTON — David Ortiz should stop by Fenway Park more often.  There may be no tangible gain for his old teammates. At this point, it defies logic to think there’d be tangible harm. On Thursday evening before Ortiz’s charity roast at House of Blues, Red Sox president Sam Kennedy recalled how it was a no-brainer to plan Friday’s jersey retirement so soon after Ortiz’s exit from the game.  Kennedy said he was the one who actually broached the question with team management last year. Basically, everyone looked at him sideways because of the implication any other time but right away made sense. “No person has meant more to the [John] Henry-[Larry] Lucchino-[Tom] Werner era than David Ortiz,” Kennedy Continue to Article
