MINNEAPOLIS -- Guess who’s back? Jose Quintana turned in the kind of game on early Thursday evening that reminds you why he has been one of baseball’s top pitchers the past few seasons. Working with a swing-and-miss curveball/changeup combo, Quintana waited out a near five-hour delay to produce a stellar outing. Quintana struck out nine batters in 6 2/3 scoreless innings as the White Sox avoided a sweep with a 9-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins in front of 27,684 at Target Field. Jose Abreu, Todd Frazier and Matt Davidson all homered for the White Sox, who finished with 18 hits and a 3-3 mark on their road trip. Even though it’s clear his crisp stuff makes all the difference, Quintana joked Continue to Article

Already told he would be cut, catcher Stephen Vogt asked the Oakland Athletics to announce his departure Thursday rather than be a distraction before a game against Houston the previous night. Rookie infielder Matt Chapman went on the 10-day disabled list with an infection in his left knee that kept him out of three straight games. General manager David Forst said Chapman was hospitalized Wednesday night to receive an intravenous antibiotic for his knee cellulitis, reports were good Thursday and he should be released Friday. OAKLAND – A’s shortstop Marcus Semien will head out to join Class-A Stockton Friday to begin an injury rehabilitation assignment that could have him back on the field before the All-Star break. The A’s can’t be sure how much time Semien will need to get back in game-ready shape. He hasn’t played a game since April 14 after suffering a fractured right wrist and undergoing surgery. “It’s going to look maybe a little like spring training,” manager Bob Melvin said of Semien’s comeback timetable. “It’s not going to be one or two games or even three or four.” The plan is to have Semien start out at five innings and gradually get stretched out to nine innings. And once he gets to nine innings, the club Continue to Article

MINNEAPOLIS Though he spent many days being chased down by Division I defensive lineman, the biggest hit Kevan Smith ever endured was on the diamond. Smith was behind the plate for Single-A Kannapolis playing at Hagerstown in 2012 when outfielder Keenyn Walkers throw to the plate was slowed down by the high grass. Next thing he knew, Smith was down and out after a serious collision. Continue to Article

The White Sox went so far outside of the box with draft pick Sam Abbott that they wound up in the pool. Whereas 34 of the team’s 40 picks were spent on college players with proven track records, the White Sox bought a lottery ticket with a potentially huge payoff when they selected the three-time Washington high school water polo MVP in the eighth round of last week’s draft. The White Sox know they possess a work in progress in Abbott, who officially signed with the club on Monday and reported to the team’s facility in Glendale, Ariz. But scouts and club officials feel if Abbott can ever tap into the potential he put on display in a workout earlier this month that gambling on the 6-foot-5, 230-pounder would be worth the risk. “This is one of the most unique stories we’ve ever drafted,” amateur scouting director Nick Hostetler said.
