MINNEAPOLIS -- Guess who’s back? Jose Quintana turned in the kind of game on early Thursday evening that reminds you why he has been one of baseball’s top pitchers the past few seasons. Working with a swing-and-miss curveball/changeup combo, Quintana waited out a near five-hour delay to produce a stellar outing. Already told he would be cut, catcher Stephen Vogt asked the Oakland Athletics to announce his departure Thursday rather than be a distraction before a game against Houston the previous night. Rookie infielder Matt Chapman went on the 10-day disabled list with an infection in his left knee that kept him out of three straight games. General manager David Forst said Chapman was hospitalized Wednesday night to receive an intravenous antibiotic for his knee cellulitis, reports were good Thursday and he should be released Friday. OAKLAND – A’s shortstop Marcus Semien will head out to join Class-A Stockton Friday to begin an injury rehabilitation assignment that could have him back on the field before the All-Star break. The A’s can’t be sure how much time Semien will need to get back in game-ready shape. He hasn’t played a game since April 14 after suffering a fractured right wrist and undergoing surgery. “It’s going to look maybe a little like spring training,” manager Bob Melvin said of Semien’s comeback timetable. “It’s not going to be one or two games or even three or four.” The plan is to have Semien start out at five innings and gradually get stretched out to nine innings. MINNEAPOLIS Though he spent many days being chased down by Division I defensive lineman, the biggest hit Kevan Smith ever endured was on the diamond. Smith was behind the plate for Single-A Kannapolis playing at Hagerstown in 2012 when outfielder Keenyn Walkers throw to the plate was slowed down by the high grass. Whereas 34 of the team’s 40 picks were spent on college players with proven track records, the White Sox bought a lottery ticket with a potentially huge payoff when they selected the three-time Washington high school water polo MVP in the eighth round of last week’s draft.
