Philadelphia Phillies
Here are a couple of surprising moves: the Philadelphia Phillies have designated righty Jeanmar Gomez and outfielder Michael Saunders for assignment. Saunders, a 2016 All-Star and, somewhat inexplicably, one of the more sought-after bats in a weak free agent market last offseason, was making $9 million. Saunders was horrible in the second half last season and continued this season apace, hitting .205/.257/.360 over 61 games. Continue to Article

Philadelphia Phillies
After giving the Michael Saunders experiment nearly three months, the Phillies on Tuesday designated the veteran outfielder for assignment. They also DFA'd reliever Jeanmar Gomez. The Phils have 10 days to either trade them, release them, place them on waivers or outright them off the 40-man roster to the minor leagues, if they accept. To replace Saunders and Gomez on the 25-man roster, the Phillies selected the contracts of outfielder Cam Perkins and left-handed reliever Hoby Milner. The Phillies guaranteed Saunders $10 million in the form of $9 million this season and a $1 million buyout on his 2018 club option. In 61 games, he hit .205/.257/.360 with six home runs, 20 RBIs and 51 strikeouts. Continue to Article

Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies spent $13.2 million on Michael Saunders and Jeanmar Gomez last winter and jettisoned both from their roster before the official start of summer. The two veterans were designated for assignment Tuesday. They were replaced by outfielder Cameron Perkins and lefthanded reliever Hoby Milner, who were summoned from triple-A Lehigh Valley. Both will make their major-league debuts when inserted into a game. Saunders, who signed a $9 million deal late last winter, was an all-star last season with Toronto. But he was one of the worst outfielders in baseball this season. Saunders hit .205 with a .257 on-base percentage and .360 slugging percentage. Six days before the Phillies cut ties with Continue to Article

St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals offense has disappointed for much of the season, with injuries and unexpected performance dips waylaying several players projected to be major contributors. On June 6, the Reds annihilated the Cardinals 13–1. Leading off that game, Fowler went 0 for 2 before getting taken out early, in the process dropping his season line to .222/.317/.423. St. Louis Cardinals
ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Cardinals appear they will once again be without second baseman Kolten Wong, after he left Wednesday’s game early due to tightness in his right forearm. “He was favoring it,” said Mike Matheny afterwards. “Yeah, he couldn’t really throw. I think it happened on his check swing, so we’re going to have him really looked at closely and gotta figure out what we’re dealing with here and deciding how long that’s going to take.” Less than two weeks ago (May 27 - June 6th), Wong was on the disabled list with a strained left elbow. Raising his batting average to .301, Wong had an RBI double and strikeout on the night before he was replaced by Greg Garcia in the top of the 6th Continue to Article
