Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies Thread

Arizona Diamondbacks
The let’s-go-Phillies chants grow lamer as the innings pass. The crowd, such as it is, dwindles to friends-and-family size long before last pitch. And it’s only June. The Phillies lost again Saturday, this time by a 5-1 count to the resurgent Arizona Diamondbacks (see Instant Replay). They have dropped nine of 10, and since going 11-9 to start the season, they are a spiffy 11-36. That drops their major-league-worst record to 22-45. All the Markelle Fultzes in the world couldn’t put them back together again. The Phillies did some things well Saturday. Jerad Eickhoff, winless on the season but saddled with a no-decision on this day, went six innings and allowed a run on five hits. It was his first Continue to Article

Philadelphia Phillies
The entire Phillies baseball operations department packed into a second-floor Citizens Bank Park conference room Wednesday evening. As the dozens of men pored over reports on the longest of long shots — the late rounds of a 40-round Major League Baseball draft — Matt Klentak exited the room and went downstairs. His team, the one with the worst record in baseball, took batting practice. Klentak sat in the dugout and, for 15 minutes, the Phillies general manager explained his restraint. The Phillies will not yet summon a prospect from the minors. They will not enact radical change to a team that was not expected to flounder but has failed to reach even that low bar. This team, for now, is what Continue to Article

Philadelphia Phillies
The crowd at Citizens Bank Park hardly reacted as Ruben Amaro Jr. took the field Wednesday night. He shook hands and chatted with first baseman Tommy Joseph during warm-ups. Moments later, the Phanatic rushed over to hand Amaro a stuffed mascot, which he offered to a young fan in the first row. Three rows back, a man held up a sign reading, "Amaro - free fall from GM to first base." The homecoming was bittersweet for Amaro, a former player who served as the Phillies' general manager for almost seven years. Wednesday night was his first return to the stadium in almost two years. "It means a lot to me to be back here," Amaro said. "I'm not going to play it off like it's nothing to me. This was Continue to Article

Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies have lost three straight games by one run. The Phillies had ample opportunity to win one or both games in Boston, but instead the result was them falling short yet again to a better team. At 21-42, the Phillies are on a 108-loss pace. Continue to Article

Arizona Diamondbacks
PHOENIX (AP) - Love is not a word you hear often from coaches in any sport. Torey Lovullo uses it often. The 51-year-old first-year manager of the surprising Arizona Diamondbacks has developed a symbiotic relationship with his players that's at the core of the team's strong start this season. "I know that I want to be here for these guys," Lovullo said, "to listen to them, accept them, love them and, if they want it, advise them and do the best thing I possibly can for helping them be successful on the field." So far, so good. The Diamondbacks are 39-26, two games behind first-place Colorado in the NL West. They have been especially dominant at home, where they have won 11 of their last 12 games Continue to Article
