In their first game after a 4-7 road trip that included four games in a 48-hour stretch in Chicago, the Tigers had a season-high 11 extra-base hits in a 15-5 win over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night. There’s an official scorer in Chicago named Bob Rosenberg who has the most wonderful wild pitch call you’ve ever heard. Whenever a pitcher from the Cubs, White Sox or an opponent throws a wayward ball, Rosenberg’s voice goes up a few octaves and delivers a dramatic and sharp “waaaaahhhhhld pitch!” so writers in the press box know how to rule the throw. Eduardo Jimenez was suspended 30 games for the shocking act, retroactive to Monday’s game. General manager Al Avila had a mandate to cut payroll last winter, but when favorable offers for players such as second baseman Ian Kinsler and outfielder J.D. Martinez didn't materialize, Detroit entered the season with a payroll ($199.76 million) that actually exceeded last year's ($198.6 million).
