SAN FRANCISCO -- The blisters on Johnny Cueto's middle and index fingers that limited his effectiveness in his last few starts haven't yet completely healed. But the two-time All-Star is learning to pitch with them. Cueto threw six strong innings and Brandon Crawford drove in three runs as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Atlanta Braves 7-1 on Sunday. Cueto (5-4) bounced back from his roughest stretch as a Giant. He was 0-3 with a 4.33 ERA in his previous four starts. "They're not bothering me like they were before," Cueto said through a translator. "I'm just getting used to it but I have to continue pitching until they get better." The Giants won their third straight home series and posted Continue to Article

Los Angeles Angels
Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout has been diagnosed with a sprained left thumb after leaving Sunday's game against the Miami Marlins. The Angels announced that X-rays taken on Trout's hand were negative for any fracture. He suffered the injury while stealing second base in the fifth inning and yelled in pain as he rose after sliding headfirst. SAN FRANCISCO — Madison Bumgarner is on schedule to take the first step in his recovery from a left-shoulder later this week. Manager Bruce Bochy said the Giants left-handed ace will likely throw a baseball for the first time since he sprained his left shoulder in a dirt bike accident in Colorado last month on Friday. Bumgarner won’t be throwing a full bullpen session from the mound; he’ll be tossing the ball around on flat ground. The team doesn’t have a timetable for his return to the rotation, but it will likely be after the All-Star break. Bumgarner will eventually throw from the mound before he begins his rehab assignment. “He could be throwing by Friday,” Bochy said. “The progress is happening, Continue to Article

SAN FRANCISCO — Over in Cleveland earlier Friday, Brandon Moss hit a three-run homer for the visiting team and five other players chipped in a pair of hits. The Royals had six runs, which meant that when Jim Johnson closed the Giants out a few hours later, what has seemed true all season became officially true. The Giants have the lowest-scoring lineup in the majors. At 3.32 runs per game, they have dipped below the equally-disappointing Royals (3.38). They are capable at the moment of making any pitching staff look dominant. A 2-0 shutout was the first of the year for the Braves, who previously had just two games this season where they allowed fewer than two runs.  “Six runs in (the last) four Continue to Article
