Atlanta Braves
LOS ANGELES – Your rose bushes might not be doing that well. But Alex Wood has really blossomed in May. A capable starter at times in the past (mostly with the Atlanta Braves), the 26-year-old Wood has cleared that bar by a wide margin recently. He held the Chicago Cubs scoreless for five innings Friday night and combined with relievers Pedro Baez and Chris Hatcher on a two-hitter in a 4-0 Dodgers win. Wood has not allowed a run in his past 25-1/3 innings, the longest scoreless streak by a pitcher in the major leagues this season, or five of his past six starts. Over that time, he has a 1.05 ERA and 0.96 WHIP while holding opposing batters to a .189 batting average with 46 strikeouts in 34 1/3 Continue to Article

ATLANTA - Taking your glove to a baseball game is a tradition as old as singing, “Take Me out to the Ballgame.” But after an encounter at Wednesday night’s Atlanta Braves-Pittsburgh Pirates game at SunTrust Park, one fan might rethink bringing the leather to the ballpark. It was the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Braves were leading 4-3. Rio Ruiz hit a ball down the right field line. It was close, but it was a fair ball. That’s when a fan reached over the outfield wall with his glove and snagged the ball. The fan immediately turned around and handed the ball to a young kid who looked to be no older than 4 or 5 years old. At that moment, a security guard jumped over the fence and aggressively Continue to Article

Ivan Nova was ticked off. Nova pitched into the ninth inning before tiring, local favorite Adam Frazier hit a three-run homer and the Pittsburgh Pirates pounded Bartolo Colon for a 9-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. After breezing through the first six innings, facing only three over the minimum, Nova (5-3) came up short in his bid to become the first pitcher in the big leagues this season with three complete games. A video made the rounds Wednesday night of an overzealous security guard taking a ball from a young Atlanta Braves fan because the man whom the child was with committed fan interference to get it. As it turns out, the kid ended up doing OK on the deal. As the incident unfolded, even the TV broadcasters urged the security guard to use "common sense" and give the ball back to the child. But he didn't, and he made sure that the man who got the ball was escorted out of the seating area. The Braves later sent an email to ESPN.com saying the boy was given a ball autographed by Braves star Freddie Freeman and was invited back to a game in June to celebrate his birthday. The man who was escorted out Continue to Article
