ANAHEIM, Calif. — Omar Narvaez started his 54th career game on Tuesday night. He has yet to face the Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros. Kevan Smith has appeared in 12 games. The list of opposing hitters he has yet to familiarize himself with is even longer than of Narvaez. Yet with Geovany Soto out for several months after he had arthroscopic elbow surgery on Tuesday, the two young backstops are what the White Sox will move forward with for the time being. While both catchers are green, the White Sox like what they have, a studious, intelligent pair who are driven to learn. All they have to do now is get up to speed as quickly as possible in order to aide the Continue to Article

ST. LOUIS -- Mookie Betts hasn't felt great about his performances lately, even if the results for the Boston Red Sox right fielder look just fine. Betts homered and drove in two runs to back six quality innings by Eduardo Rodriguez and the Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 on Tuesday night in the opener of a two-game interleague series. "I feel OK," Betts said. "I had a good first at-bat and then not really another good one after that. So I'm just trying to put it all together." Betts went 1-for-5 and is batting .371 (13-for-35) with five homers and five doubles over his last eight games. He won AL player of the week Monday, but still says he is searching for better rhythm. "I just feel Continue to Article

ST. LOUIS - Mookie Betts homered and drove in two runs, Jackie Bradley Jr. also went deep and the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 on Tuesday night to take the opener of a two-game interleague series. Bradley had two of Boston's six hits, and starter Eduardo Rodriguez (2-1) allowed three runs and five hits over six innings. Rodriguez walked two, struck out five and threw a season-high 110 pitches. St. Louis made three errors and lost for just the second time in 10 games. Lance Lynn (4-2) gave up four runs, two earned, and three hits in six innings, striking out four and walking one. Betts began the game with his seventh homer and 10th career leadoff shot, tying Jacoby Ellsbury Continue to Article

Boston Red Sox
May 17 is an odd day in Cubs history. For starters, the longest game in franchise history occurred on May 17, 1927 when the Cubs beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 in 22 innings. Exactly 50 years later (1977), the Cubs hit seven homers en route to a 23-6 victory over the San Diego Padres as Larry Biitner (2), Dave Rosello, Gene Clines, Jerry Morales, Steve Ontiveros and Bobby Murcer all went deep (h/t Chris Kamka for the info). But May 17 is also home to what may have been the craziest game the Cubs franchise has ever taken part in (yes, including Game 7 of the 2016 World Series; that was the greatest game every played). Thirty-eight years ago (May 17, 1979), the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cubs Continue to Article
