Chicago Cubs
ST. LOUIS – The Cubs are without a simple explanation for their uneven start, not totally buying the World Series hangover theory, not having a devastating injury as an excuse and not noticing a new sense of entitlement in the clubhouse. Being surprised that the Cubs are hovering around .500 might be the wrong way to look at it. This is a team that has allowed 41 runs in the first inning, put up a 4.56 rotation ERA, committed 27 errors through 34 games and watched underperforming hitters up and down the lineup. It could be so much worse. “I don’t think it’s complacency at all,” Hoyer said Friday before the Cubs inched to 18-17 with a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Chicago Cubs
ST. LOUIS – The Cubs are being protective of Addison Russell, hoping their All-Star shortstop’s sore right shoulder doesn’t develop into a disabled-list situation.  “I don’t think that it’s up to that yet,” Russell said Friday before playing catch at Busch Stadium. “As far as it feels right now, I think we’re on the lighter side of maybe one or two more days.” Manager Joe Maddon rested Russell and later used him as a pinch-hitter during a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Russell – who hadn’t thrown a baseball in three days – said it felt like something that had been building more than getting injured on a specific play. “I really wanted to play, but I think we both feel that it’s better Continue to Article

Tim Anderson is headed home Friday morning to attend the funeral of his close friend and will rejoin the White Sox in Southern California on Monday. The White Sox shortstop said after Thursday’s 7-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins he plans to attend the funeral of longtime friend Branden Moss. Moss, the godfather of Anderson’s young daughter, was shot and killed early Sunday morning near the University of Alabama campus. Anderson said he has done his best to enjoy the moment throughout a trying week off the field and has relied on his teammates for support. “Trying to balance those off the field things with on the field,” Anderson said. “Try and combine and let them run into each other. But for the Continue to Article

Chicago Cubs
Every baseball fan in Chicago has heard of Ronnie “Woo Woo.” The 75-year-old has appeared in the stands at Wrigley Field for decades now. Over the past few years, it wasn’t uncommon to hear him shouting “woo” when watching a Chicago Cubs game on television. “Woo Woo,” whose real name is Ronnie Wickers, is currently feuding with the team after being kicked out of the park during a game in April. Chicago Cubs
The Cubs woke up Friday morning with a 17-17 record and roughly 20 percent of their schedule in the rearview mirror. Typically, Memorial Day Weekend is the first true checkpoint to assess MLB teams as contenders or pretenders, but as the Cubs head to St. Louis to take on their rival Cardinals, there's a sense of urgency surrounding Joe Maddon's squad (and in an anxious fanbase). After a rough start to 2017, the Cardinals currently lead the National League Central with a 19-14 record, 2.5 games ahead of the fourth-place Cubs. The Cubs clearly have not hit their stride yet and the roster is still rife with so much talent and proven track records that there really is no reason to panic in mid-May so long as everybody remains relatively healthy.
