As I mentioned in the recaps, Yankees reliever Bryan Mitchell pitched a scoreless ninth inning in yesterday’s loss to the Orioles. Then he moved to first base for the tenth inning, making way for Aroldis Chapman, only to came back to pitch the 11th. His time in the field was mixed, allowing one foul popup to drop but catching another. Yankees first baseman Greg Bird gave his team tons of confidence to hand him the everyday job at first base to start the 2017 regular season, batting .451/.556/1.098 with eight home runs in 51 spring at-bats. GM Brian Cashman doesn’t have any intent to demote Bird back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reports. John Gibbons caught Blue Jays reporters off guard with a joke about Donald Trump on Sunday. One day after U.S. President Donald Trump was lampooned at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons decided to have some fun with members of the media at the expense of the polarizing world leader. Following Toronto’s 3-1 win over the Rays, a reporter asked Gibbons if he had any pregame concerns over Aaron Sanchez’s readiness to pitch on Sunday, considering the right-hander lasted just one inning. Before the New York Yankees unloaded with a barrage of home runs to stun the Orioles 14-11, the story on Friday night was Manny Machado. The Orioles slugger was locked in, collecting three hits and driving in three runs. Among his hits was a truly monumental home run that not only cleared Monument Park at Yankee Stadium, it nearly shattered some restaurant windows above the park in straight away center field.
