A mere 34 years into his tenure as the Yankees play-by-play announcer, John Sterling is good for a few malapropisms, dated cultural references and kindly grandpa jokes per game. After the Yankees overcame an eight-run deficit to knock off the Orioles in a wild 1411 win on Friday night, the veteran announcer babbled with superlatives describing the thrilling comeback. “That’s the kind game you put on cassette!” Sterling bellowed after Matt Holliday belted a walk-off three-run home run to clinch the win. Anthony Swarzak (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the White Sox, who won their fifth straight. Tigers reliever Alex Wilson (0-1) allowed two hits and two unearned runs in the eighth. Detroit third baseman Nick Castellanos committed two errors in the inning, and three in the game, leading to Soto's go-ahead hit. Former Tigers pitcher Mike Pelfrey started for Chicago and went 4 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out two. He absorbed a ton of information in spring camp, but perhaps it’s what Michael Kopech observed watching Jose Quintana that could help most. For five weeks in big league camp, the extremely motivated White Sox pitching prospect gleaned every piece of information he could from more experienced teammates. Kopech and veteran starting pitcher James Shields discussed pitch sequencing and the importance of the changeup. Infielder Tyler Saladino talked with the No. 14-ranked prospect in baseball about visualizing success. Catcher Geo Soto told Kopech pretty much everything about life in the majors. But even though he didn’t say much, Quintana’s practice sessions may have provided the most valuable lesson Continue to Article
