A thoroughly unremarkably pitcher for the first two-plus seasons of his major league career, Graveman came into this year with a 4.08 ERA (which looks even worse when considering that the A’s home park favors pitchers) and a weak strikeout rate of just 14.5% (5.6 per 9 innings pitched). Graveman drawing Oakland’s Opening Day assignment had far more to do with a lack of healthy and qualified alternatives than anything else. A week later, Graveman sits at 2-0, with a 2.08 ERA. Joey Gallo isn't concerning himself with when Adrian Beltre will be ready to take over at third base again for the Texas Rangers, which likely means a return to the minors for the young slugger. The 23-year-old homered and had a career-high five RBIs to back left-hander Martin Perez, and the Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics 8-1 on the first day Beltre (right calf) was eligible to come off the disabled list and resume his chase for 3,000 hits with 58 to go. Monday is Greater Kansas City Day, an annual charity effort that coincides with the first home game of the Royals’ season and raises money for the Rotary Youth Camp and other causes. Rotary Club volunteers and donors will sell special editions of The Kansas City Star at street corners across the metropolitan area. Rotary Youth Camp gives disadvantaged children and children with disabilities a chance to experience camping. A First Pitch Party will be from 6 to 9 a.m. at Union Station.
