When the Los Angeles Angels' Matt Shoemaker last pitched against the Seattle Mariners, a line drive nearly cost the right-hander his career and his life. Shoemaker suffered a fractured skull and cranial bleeding when a ball travelling 105 mph off Kyle Seager's bat hit the right side of his head in the second inning Sept. 4. The 30-year-old answered some of those concerns in spring training, when he amassed 21 strikeouts and walked just five in 17 innings, and will make his second start of the season Sunday against the Mariners. The Texas Rangers considered tinkering with the top of the batting order because of the speed Delino DeShields has and the ability to get on base that Shin-Soo Choo possesses. Carlos Gomez made that a moot point. Gomez is a spark for the Rangers' offense, locking down the leadoff spot for the Rangers as they close out the series against Oakland Athletics on Sunday. Kendall Graveman is the Oakland Athletics' ace in the absence of injured Sonny Gray, and pitched Saturday night like he deserves the recognition full time. Graveman held Texas hitless until Mike Napoli homered with two outs in the seventh inning, and the A's beat the Rangers and Yu Darvish 6-1.
