Philadelphia 76ers fans experienced yet another gut-punch on Wednesday, when the team announced that Joel Embiid — light of our lives, Internet superhero and, as of this year, honest-to-goodness NBA basketball-playing behemoth — will miss the rest of the season with a tear to the meniscus in his left knee. After missing the first two seasons of his professional career due to a fractured navicular bone in his right foot, Embiid finally got healthy enough to play this season, and looked for all the world like the superstar-in-the-making that Process-server Sam Hinkie expected him to be when he rolled the dice on the injured big man out of Kansas with the No. 3 pick in the 2014 NBA draft. Through 31 games, he averaged 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.1 assists in just 25.4 minutes a night, a level of per-minute production that evoked comparisons to the likes of Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O’Neal, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Walt Bellamy and All-NBA marvel Anthony Davis. The Trail Blazers huddled in a timeout with just more than 17 seconds left against Oklahoma City, and the overwhelming sentiment was simple: relax. The Thunder had trimmed Portland's lead to 110-109, but the Blazers refused to get rattled and came away with a 114-109 victory Thursday night. ''Even though it got scary there at the end, we were still able to calm ourselves down and get the win,'' said Damian Lillard, who finished with 33 points. Continue to Article

Philadelphia center Joel Embiid's season is over because of left knee problems, including a torn meniscus that is worse than the 76ers first thought. Embiid hadn't played since Jan. 27, and the 76ers had said in recent days that his return was likely later this week. ''He's got good people around him,'' 76ers coach Brett Brown said Wednesday before Philadelphia visited the Miami Heat. Continue to Article

Highlights of National Basketball Association games on Wednesday: Nets 109, Kings 100 Brook Lopez scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and the Brooklyn Nets ended their 16-game losing streak Wednesday with a 109-100 victory over the Sacramento Kings at the Golden 1 Center. Lopez made 9 of 17 shots from the field and went over the 10,000-point mark for his career as Brooklyn prevailed for the first since Jan. 20. Jeremy Lin scored 17 points and Isaiah Whitehead added 14 points off the bench for Brooklyn. Continue to Article

Philadelphia 76ers center Jahlil Okafor has never received much praise for his defense, and for good reason. In an era where NBA big men are expected to cover lots of ground and check multiple positions on the same possession, Okafor is a player who seems to be playing in the wrong area. A missed runner for Goran Dragic turned into an offensive rebound for Rodney McGruder and a bucket for Hassan Whiteside. Continue to Article
