Brazilian big man Anderson Varejao was released Friday by the Golden State Warriors, opening a roster spot for the NBA's winningest club that appears to be for guard Briante Weber. Varejao, a 34-year-old center, appeared in 14 games for the Warriors this season, averaging 1.3 points and 1.9 rebounds. The Sun-Sentinel newspaper in South Florida reported that former Miami Heat guard Briante Weber, 24, accepted a 10-day contract with the Warriors over offers from Miami and Charlotte. The NBA has fined Hawks forward Taurean Prince and Heat forward James Johnson $25,000 each for their roles in a scuffle during Wednesday's game in Miami. Prince was ejected midway through the fourth quarter for pulling down Hassan Whiteside from behind as the Heat center went up for a shot. Prince was given a flagrant-2 foul. Continue to Article

Philadelphia center Joel Embiid will not play against the San Antonio Spurs, remaining at home to rest a bruised left knee. The 76ers will also be without Nerlens Noel, who has an upper respiratory infection, and Robert Covington is out with a bruised right hand. In a week that has rested as rather contentious for the Round Mound of Rebound, it must have been nice for Charles Barkley to actually see his blustery views not only agreed with, but actually spun forward in a way that makes just about everyone look good except the players behind Detroit’s 22-27 record. TNT’s Barkley, who has battled both LeBron James and Dwyane Wade recently in a war of words that has dated back over a decade with James, pinned his focus on a wildly-inconsistent Pistons team prior to Turner’s showing of Detroit’s loss to the Boston Celtics. “I think they’ve got a lot of players who think they’re better than they are,” Barkley opined just before that defeat, a sentiment that Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy didn’t exactly dismiss a day later. One of the anomalies of the first half of the NBA season is that the San Antonio Spurs -- considered a real contender for the league title -- have had problems beating teams with sub-.500 records. The Spurs -- who have lost 11 times all season, with six of those defeats coming to teams without winning records -- get another chance to re-establish their normal dominant role when they face the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday at AT&T Center in San Antonio.
