There was a time when Michael Malone helped Danilo Gallinari off the floor. Denver remains just a game and a half out of the top-heavy Western Conference’s eighth and final playoff spot, despite a 14-21 record, but if the Nuggets have any hope of emerging from a pack that also includes the Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers and New Orleans Pelicans, they’ll have to do something about a defense that ranks as the league’s worst since the start of December. Never was that more apparent to Nuggets coach Michael Malone than after a 120-113 loss to the same Kings they’re chasing in the standings — and the same Sacramento franchise that fired him just 24 games into the 2014-15 season — and boy did Malone let his players hear about it through the media. The Kings (15-19) play the first of seven straight contests at the Golden 1 Center on Wednesday when they host the Miami Heat. Miami (10-26) lost 99-90 at the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday and has dropped six in a row for the second time this season. JaVale McGee doesn’t appreciate the way Shaquille O’Neal makes fun of him, or how often he does it. The athletic shot-blocker and lob finisher’s penchant for doing goofy, embarrassing, hard to justify things on the basketball court has made him a perennial featured player on O’Neal’s popular “Shaqtin’ a Fool” segment on TNT’s “Inside the NBA” coverage, with Shaq highlighting JaVale’s blunders during his days with the Washington Wizards and Denver Nuggets. While O’Neal is far from the only one who has laughed at JaVale’s miscues over the years, McGee has made it clear that he doesn’t find Shaq’s segment or its effect on his reputation funny in the least.
