Denver lost to South Dakota State 54-53 in the Summit League semifinals on Monday night, but it's the way the loss transpired that is likely to stick with coach Joe Scott and his players for years to come. That is especially true for freshman Joe Rosga. [ Yahoo Tourney Pick’em is open. Sign up now and play for $50K ] Jake Bittle made one of two free throws with two seconds remaining to give No. 2 seed South Dakota State a one-point lead. Sixth-seeded Denver inbounded the ball and SDSU senior Deondre Parks inexplicably fouled Rosga 70 feet from the basket as the horn sounded. Officials put 1.2 seconds back on the clock and Rosga at the foul line for the front end of a 1-and-1 free throwing shooting situation. Rosga went into the game ranked ninth in the nation in free throw shooting at 89 percent. He had made all three previous free thows he attempted in the game. He was 100-for-112 this season at the line but his 113th attempt came up a little short, bouncing off the iron and South Dakota State grabbed the rebound to win. Denver coach Joe Scott on missed FT: "He's a 90 percent FT shooter. Ask any other guy, they'll take Joe Rosga at the line every time." — Cody Rivera (@CodyRivera33) March 8, 2016 Not only did the Jackrabbits enjoy some good fortune to earn their win, they also overcame a stretch of nearly 13 minutes without making a field goal. They did score several times from the free throw line during the shooting slump that started with the final 55 seconds of the first half and lasted until the 8:17 mark of the second half. [ Improbable bounce sends Northern Iowa back to the NCAA tournament ] Rosga was undoubtedly heartbroken by his missed free throw, but he already had started to put it behind him within hours of the game ending. He posted a simple message on his Twitter account we can only assume was a reference to the outcome and his mindset. Motivation — Joe Rosga (@joe_Rosga33) March 8, 2016 Yes, the Pioneers will be kicking themselves over this one for years to come. Fortunately for Rosga, he's only a freshman and should get three more chances at a conference title and an NCAA Tournament berth. - - - - - - - [ Kyle Ringo is the assistant editor of The Dagger on Yahoo Sports.
