Coach Mark Helfrich certainly wasn't concerned about Charles Nelson's missteps in Oregon's opener, joking that he'd bet his mortgage on the receiver and special teams standout. Nelson had 288 all-purpose yards for the No. 24 Ducks in the season opener as he transitions back from the defense to the offense. Troy Dye has appeared in just one college game but already he's grabbing attention with his play - so much so that he was named Pac-12 defensive player of the week. It was the most for an Oregon freshman since Walter Thurmond III had 14 tackles in 2006. Dye was also named the Ducks' internal defensive player of the week, coach Mark Helfrich said Sunday. First-year Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall figured his defense was ready for the season-opener against Richmond. "In general, I overestimated the amount and volume of defensive schemes and calls and the number of things that our defense could handle in game one," Mendenhall said at his Monday press conference. Oregon held its spot in the AP poll after a 53-28 win over lower-division UC Davis, which wasn't necessarily the margin of victory many expected, but it did provide graduate transfer Dakota Prukop a chance to get his feet wet with the Ducks. Devon Allen has seen only one real downside in his ongoing transition from track back to football: He's just not used to the cleats yet. The hurdler's feet were a bit sore following his first game back from his summer trip to the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Just two months ago, Allen won the 110-meter hurdles in the Olympic Trials - held on campus at Hayward Field - becoming the first collegian to win the event since Renaldo Nehemiah of Maryland in 1980.
