BYU and Utah may have as much crossover within the two programs as any two major football schools in the country. BYU coach Kalani Sitake was the Utah defensive coordinator just two seasons ago and was one of the first hires by 12th-year Utes coach Kyle Whittingham. Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall was surprised how quickly a losing attitude dragged down the Cavaliers in their season-opening loss. The first-year Virginia coach had spent spring ball and fall camp trying to install a new mindset. The Cavaliers even professed bolstered confidence heading in their opener against Richmond, but when things went bad early, Mendenhall saw the demeanor of his team shift quickly from hopeful to despondent. Richmond coach Danny Rocco spent five years as an assistant coach at Virginia and probably knows Scott Stadium better than new Cavaliers coach Bronco Mendenhall. When Rocco takes his Spiders to Charlottesville on Saturday to be the first opponent of the Mendenhall era at Virginia, he believes his team will be ready for the moment. Washington State has reason to be wary about opening the season against an FCS opponent. The Cougars were upset by Portland State in their first game last year and they start this season Saturday hosting regular FCS contender Eastern Washington.
