Felix Hernandez and Justin Verlander couldn't settle things Wednesday night, so slugger Nelson Cruz decided the outcome with his bat. Cruz hit his 28th homer in the eighth inning after Hernandez and Verlander dueled through the first seven, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers 3-1 to complete a three-game sweep. Cruz hit a 1-1 pitch from Justin Wilson (2-4) over the batter's eye 421 feet away to help the Mariners get their season-high sixth straight victory. Continue to Article

Jake Smolinski singled and scored the deciding run in the third inning, rookie Zach Neal earned his first career win as a starter and the Oakland Athletics held on to beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 on Tuesday night. Kendall Graveman pitched seven strong innings, Billy Butler hit a tiebreaking single in the sixth and the Oakland Athletics beat Baltimore 3-2 on Monday night despite another home run from Orioles slugger Manny Machado. Stephen Vogt homered, scored twice and had two RBIs for the A's while Butler added two hits. Machado, who hit home runs in his first three at-bats Sunday, belted his 26th home run of the season off A's reliever Ryan Dull with two outs in the eighth. Continue to Article

Seattle Mariners
In the midst of the wild card race in the American League, the Seattle Mariners determined they don't have the time to wait for Taijuan Walker to rediscover the potential he showed earlier in the season. The Mariners optioned the struggling Walker to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday, a surprising move that the club hopes will jump start his sluggish performances on the mound. Walker was the corresponding move made when Seattle activated recently acquired reliever Arquimedes Caminero. Continue to Article
