Brock Holt made sure an outstanding effort by the Red Sox bullpen did not go to waste. Holt's RBI single in the 11th inning lifted Boston past the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Thursday night, a victory made possible by five scoreless innings by Red Sox relievers. Ichiro, the Marlins' fourth outfielder, has started two of Miami's past 13 games because of the Marlins' formidable outfield starters -- Christian Yelich, Marcel Ozuna and Giancarlo Stanton. The three-game series with the Rockies concludes a six-game road trip for the Marlins, who open a six-game homestand Monday. Miami manager Don Mattingly said he wanted Ichiro to reach the 3,000-hit milestone when the Marlins were home, but he's been mostly pinch-hitting because the three starting outfielders have been well and the Marlins (57-51) are tied with St. Louis for the second wild-card spot -- three games ahead of Colorado. No doubt you heard people say this week that trading for Jay Bruce was an insurance policy for the New York Mets should Yoenis Cespedes leave after this season. As it turns out, Bruce is also a pretty darn good option when Cespedes is put on the disabled list and the Mets need that thump in their offense. Bruce delivered just that Thursday night, knocking a three-run homer in the fifth inning — his first as a Met — to help his new squad to a 4-1 victory against those cross-city rivals, the New York Yankees.
