In the eighth inning, Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis hit a line shot out to Herrera in center. Herrera’s first step was toward the infield, and that proved to be a costly mistake. Herrera’s poor read led to the ball sailing over his head by a fairly great distance. Continue to Article

Philadelphia Phillies rookie Zach Eflin is trying to establish himself in the majors. Pittsburgh Pirates ace Gerrit Cole already has done that but, now, he's trying to ramp up an injury-interrupted season and regain the dominance he had last year. In the series opener Tuesday night, it was the Nationals who started a rookie, as right-hander Reynaldo Lopez made his big league debut and was tagged with the loss after he gave up 10 hits and fanned nine in 4 2/3 innings. The Milwaukee Brewers invested $50 million on Matt Garza three years ago to be their staff ace. The Pittsburgh Pirates, never one to throw money around, are paying left-hander Francisco Liriano $13 million to be their staff ace this season. The Brewers, of course, would love to see Garza pitch well -- something he's done infrequently while going 15-25 overall since signing his big contract. Continue to Article
