Cleveland Indians
Cleveland Indians catcher Yan Gomes has been mired in a slump all season (his average hasn’t been over .200 since April), and on Saturday his faithful teammates staged a special ceremony to help him break out of it. They sacrificed a Target chicken (among other things) to Jobu, Pedro Cerrano’s voodoo doll from the movie Major League, and wrapped Gomes in a white sheet while they all blew on party horns. On Sunday, a day after the clubhouse ceremony, Gomes left the Indians’ game against the Minnesota Twins in the fifth inning after taking a rough tumble over first base. With one out in the inning, Gomes hit a ground ball to third base, and the throw pulled Twins first baseman Kennys Vargas off the bag. Continue to Article

The Cleveland Indians open a three-game series with the defending World Series champion Kansas City Royals on Monday, but without starting catcher Yan Gomes. While the Indians arrived in Kansas City, Gomes was headed back to Cleveland to have his right shoulder checked by Dr. Mark Schickendantz. Gomes hurt the shoulder Sunday in the fifth inning of a 6-1 victory at Minnesota when he stepped awkwardly on the first base bag while attempting to avoid the tag of Kenny Vargas. Continue to Article

Josh Donaldson hit a tiebreaking two-run double with two outs in the ninth against his former team and the Toronto Blue Jays held on for a 5-3 win over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. Troy Tulowitzki homered while Russell Martin and Justin Smoak added two hits apiece for the Blue Jays. Donaldson, traded from Oakland to Toronto prior to the 2015 season, also singled and scored in the first inning to help the Blue Jays win after A's starter Rich Hill left the game with a blister on his finger in the first inning. Cleveland Indians
The Kansas City Royals are heading into a big series with Cleveland on a sour note. Joakim Soria allowed Jarrod Saltalamacchia's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, and the Royals lost 4-2 to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. Kansas City is now eight games behind the AL Central-leading Indians, whom the Royals will host in a three-game series starting Monday night. Continue to Article
