Oakland Athletics
Oakland Athletics fans might have a hard time recognizing their team when it takes the field for the continuation of a four-game series against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night. When last seen in Oakland, the A's were losing six of nine to the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels and Milwaukee Brewers with the likes of Eric Surkamp and Andrew Triggs making one-third of the starts and Max Muncy manning right field on eight occasions. The A's return Wednesday, just six days later, with left-hander Sean Manaea and right fielder Josh Reddick having rejoined the team off the disabled list, and with lefty Rich Hill scheduled to do the same Saturday. After nearly 4 hours and more than 350 pitches in a topsy-turvy game that featured nearly as may momentum swings as big hits, Oakland closer Ryan Madson said the only games he enjoyed more in his career were when he won a championship. Pinch-hitter Jake Smolinski hit a go-ahead, three-run homer during Oakland's five-run eighth inning and Madson survived a dicey ninth for a six-out save that carried the Athletics to a 13-11 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. ''It was a whirlwind game,'' Madson said. Continue to Article

San Francisco Giants
Having scored five or more runs in each of the first five games of their current road trip, you'd think the last thing the Oakland Athletics would need right now is more firepower. Melvin sat at his desk after Monday's win hoping to get a report that Reddick, who broke his left thumb on May 19, had completed nine innings pain-free. Continue to Article

Rookie Daniel Mengden, with that quirky double-pump delivery and old-school handlebar mustache, thought his first major league win might come sooner than this as well as he had pitched so far. The 23-year-old pitched into the eighth inning for his first major league win Monday night, backed by Marcus Semien's three-run homer and four RBIs, and Oakland beat the San Francisco Giants 8-3 to open the Bay Bridge Series. Semien connected in the decisive second and Jed Lowrie and Khris Davis added RBI doubles against Jeff Samardzija (8-5) in that five-run inning, then Semien added a run-scoring double in the sixth.
