Seattle Mariners
Second chances don't come often in life. You rarely get the opportunity to redo something you screwed up or missed out on. On Sunday, one Boston Red Sox fan was in the right place at the right time not just once, but twice, and he got to correct a pretty embarrassing mistake.  The Red Sox were playing the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, and at one point during the game, a foul ball was hit behind home plate, and it reached the upper level of Fenway Park. As the ball came down, a fan reached for it. It touched his hand. And then, just like that, it was gone. The fan couldn't hold on to it, and the ball bounced off his hands and into the seats below. That would be a hard thing to live with, especially since there's video evidence. That he missed the ball is itself good story, but most people would probably rather have the ball itself than a story about how the ball clanked off their hand.  But fate wasn't done with this Red Sox fan. In the seventh inning, David Ortiz hit a foul ball to the exact same spot. And this time, that fan was ready. As the ball came down toward him, he had both hands out ready to catch it. The ball fell in, and he held on.  [ Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Baseball contest now ] To celebrate, he high fived the people around him so hard that I thought their hands might fall off. He was pumped, and he had every right to be. Second chances are rare; he may not have been ready for the ball the first time, but he seized the moment when it came to him again. And catching the ball after missing it is a much, much better story to to tell. More MLB coverage from Yahoo Sports:   - - - - - - Liz Roscher is a writer for Big League Stew on Yahoo Sports. Detroit Tigers
Overshadowed again in a loaded National League, the San Francisco Giants have taken control of their division with a run that feels awfully familiar. San Francisco beat Tampa Bay 5-1 on Sunday for its eighth consecutive victory, and the Giants lead the NL West by 6 1/2 games. ''It's all about pitching, defense and timely hitting,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. Continue to Article

Detroit Tigers
Expect the Seattle Mariners to try to exploit a Detroit Tigers' bullpen that has struggled more often than not when they visit the Motor City for the opener of a four-game series on Monday. Detroit's bullpen was ripped twice in four games in a series at Kansas City that ended Sunday with lefty Kyle Ryan surrendering a run in the 13th inning, giving the Royals a 2-1 win. The Tigers relievers worked four scoreless frames before Ryan, who was just called up that day, gave up a bases-loaded single through a drawn-in infield. Continue to Article

While Cheslor Cuthbert delivered the game-winning hit, Chris Young said pitching six sharp innings on Father's Day was an emotional outing for him. Cuthbert singled home Lorenzo Cain in the 13th inning to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The Royals won six of seven on their homestand and have the best home record in the American League at 25-8. Continue to Article

David Price snapped a personal three-game losing streak by pitching eight sharp innings, Mookie Betts hit a go-ahead homer and the Boston Red Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 on Sunday.
