New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins Thread

New York Yankees
Masahiro Tanaka just needed to hit the road to find his groove again. Tanaka matched a season high with eight sparkling innings, Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer and the New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 8-2 on Friday night. ''There's season where you do well as home and there's season where you do better away on the road,'' Tanaka said through an interpreter. Continue to Article

Minnesota Twins
From this point on, every home run David Ortiz hits in his final MLB season will be significant for one reason or another. That was especially true though on Friday. With one big swing, Ortiz tied three Hall of Famers for 19th place on the all-time home run list by hitting No. 521 for his career. Those Hall of Famers include Willie McCovey, Frank Thomas, and the greatest player to ever put on a Boston Red Sox uniform, Ted Williams.  Yeah, we'd say that's some special company, especially given the tie-in with Williams. Williams, of course, hit all 521 of his home runs with the Red Sox. That means his spot atop the franchise's home run list remains safe. Ortiz is still 58 homers away after hitting that same number for the Minnesota Twins from 1997-2002. [ Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Baseball contest now ] Ortiz's 521st homer was a no-doubt, 400-footer against Seattle's Taijuan Walker. Unfortunately for Boston, it didn't have any real bearing on the outcome. They ended up falling 8-4 to Seattle . But it certainly had a bearing on history. It also served as another loud reminder that Ortiz is still among baseball's most dangerous hitters. He now has 18 homers already this season, which puts him on pace for a fourth straight 30-homer campaign. That's pretty remarkable. As are these numbers: With one more homer, Ortiz will have 19th place all to himself. If he gets to 32 this season, he'll pass Jimmie Foxx for 18th place. If he gets to 34, he'll pass Mickey Mantle for 17th place, Maybe there's even an outside chance he'll get to 548, which would equal Mike Schmidt. That's a lot of ground to cover, but Ortiz is showing no signs of slowing down at age 40.   More MLB coverage from Yahoo Sports: - - - - - - - Mark Townsend is a writer for Big League Stew on Yahoo Sports.
