Two teams currently heading in opposite directions are meeting at Petco Park this week and one of the reminders of the San Diego Padres' present plight is starting against them Friday night. In 2011, the Padres made right-hander Joe Ross the 28th overall pick of the June draft. The dream was to have Joe advance quickly and join his brother Tyson in the Padres' rotation. June has not been kind to the Philadelphia Phillies. This is quite the comedown from April and May, in which the Phillies played competitive, if not always competent baseball. After a rough start in Cincinnati, they swept the San Diego Padres, the Nationals, and the Cleveland Indians, all in April. Continue to Article

Does Jayson Werth have your attention now? If not, then you probably missed his boisterous and at times explicit interview that took place moments after he delivered the game-winning hit against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. With his adrenaline still pumping and his jersey ripped to shreds, Werth joined MASN reporter Dan Kolko for an interview that was broadcast live on television and over the PA system at Nationals Park. That meant they were working without a net, and that proved to be a dangerous proposition given the content of the questions and how wound up Werth was in that moment. Werth had a lot to say, and really didn't care how it came across. He reserved the strongest of his comments though for his critics, who Kolko pointed out have questioned his ability to produce at this seemingly late stage in his career. Warning: Fired up baseball player using strong language. And it's more than just words. Already in June, Werth has raised his batting average by 23 points, and he's also delivered game-winning hits in two of the Nationals last four games. That's a pretty strong physical statement that he has some fuel left in the tank. Here's a full transcript of the interview, which we've cleaned up for the benefit of our younger audience.
