Does Jayson Werth have your attention now? If not, then you probably missed his boisterous and at times explicit interview that took place moments after he delivered the game-winning hit against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night.  With his adrenaline still pumping and his jersey ripped to shreds, Werth joined MASN reporter Dan Kolko for an interview that was broadcast live on television and over the PA system at Nationals Park. That meant they were working without a net, and that proved to be a dangerous proposition given the content of the questions and how wound up Werth was in that moment.  Werth had a lot to say, and really didn't care how it came across. He reserved the strongest of his comments though for his critics, who Kolko pointed out have questioned his ability to produce at this seemingly late stage in his career.   Warning: Fired up baseball player using strong language.   Jayson Werth to the critics pic.twitter.com/Qq0iRS9ZWl — Danny (@recordsANDradio) June 16, 2016 If nothing else, he now has the attention of those who pointed at his .225 batting average through May as a sign he was finished. And it's more than just words. Already in June, Werth has raised his batting average by 23 points, and he's also delivered game-winning hits in two of the Nationals last four games. That's a pretty strong physical statement that he has some fuel left in the tank. Here's a full transcript of the interview, which we've cleaned up for the benefit of our younger audience.  Continue to Article

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jayson Werth singled in the winning run with two outs in the 12th inning, giving the Washington Nationals a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday long after starters Stephen Strasburg and Jason Hammel dueled to a scintillating draw. Continue to Article

Florida Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki doubled to rightfield with two outs in the ninth inning Wednesday to reach a global baseball hit milestone, although one not recognized by Major League Baseball. The 42-year-old Japanese star tagged closing relief pitcher Fernando Rodney of the host San Diego Padres for his 4,257th combined professional hit in North American and Japanese top-level games. Ichiro has 2,979 hits in Major League Baseball after getting 1,278 during nine Japan League seasons with the Orix Blue Wave before making his move across the Pacific Ocean in 2001. SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Ichiro Suzuki singled in the first inning and doubled in the ninth to raise his hits total in the Japanese and North American major leagues to 4,257, passing Pete Rose's record Major League Baseball total during the Miami Marlins' 6-3 loss to the San Diego Padres. San Diego Padres
One of the things that has made Ichiro a legendary hitter is his ability to put the ball where the defense isn't. He proved that yet again Wednesday in his history-making 4,256th career hit in professional baseball. It wasn't the most glorious hit you'll ever seen — far from it, actually — but a single is a single and a Ichiro tied Pete Rose's career record. The caveat, of course, is that 1,278 of Ichiro's hits came in Japan, so they don't hold exactly the same weight as Rose's, which all came in MLB. [ Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Baseball contest now ] As for the hit itself: Ichiro led off the Miami Marlins' game the San Diego Padres by tapping a pitch down the first-base line and beating it out. Not glamorous. Not one of the gappers we've seen so many times over the years. But keep in mind that's a 42-year-old speeding down to first base. Give the credit where it's due. Speaking of credit, that's the big question here. When Ichiro passes Rose, expect a mixture of Ichiro salutes and Rose devotees trying to downplay the accomplishment. It's not an official record, mind you. Pete Rose is still "The Hit King."  Rose himself recently said Ichiro's hit count isn't quite on this level, telling USA Today : “It sounds like in Japan,’’ Rose told USA TODAY Sports, “they’re trying to make me the Hit Queen. I’m not trying to take anything away from Ichiro, he’s had a Hall of Fame career, but the next thing you know, they’ll be counting his high-school hits. “I don’t think you’re going to find anybody with credibility say that Japanese baseball is equivalent to major-league baseball. There are too many guys that fail here, and then become household names there, like Tuffy Rhodes. How can he not do anything here, and hit (a record-tying) 55 home runs (in 2001) over there? “It has something to do with the caliber of personnel.’’ Rose isn't wrong. But that doesn't mean Ichiro celebrations are misguided either. This may not be the final celebration for Ichiro this year. He's at 2,978 hits in his MLB career, getting closer by the day to the magic 3,000-mark. That's one celebration that no one will deny. Not even Pete Rose.
