Cincinnati Reds
This past offseason, the San Francisco Giants made two big free agent signings to replenish their starting rotation. They snatched up Johnny Cueto, who had spent 2015 with the Kansas City Royals and the Cincinnati Reds, and Jeff Samardzija, who pitched for the Chicago White Sox in 2015. They joined Giants' rotation mainstays Madison Bumgarner, Matt Cain, and Jake Peavy. Signing Cueto and Samardzija wasn't without risk. Their 2015 seasons had been less-than-ideal -- Cueto had a 4.76 ERA with the Royals, and Samardzija a 4.96 ERA with the White Sox -- and bounce-back years were far from a sure thing. But a quarter into the 2016 season, and in the middle of a stretch of games where they've won 12 of 13, the Giants' free agent pitchers are their greatest strength, while Matt Cain and Jake Peavy have struggled, and struggled mightily. [Elsewhere: Padres find embarrassing new way to lose ] You can watch Jake Peavy try to get his season back on track against the San Diego Padres today in Yahoo Sports' Free Game of the Day. First pitch is at 3:45 p.m. Eastern, and you can stream it on Yahoo's  Sports Home ,  MLB index  and  video home . Local blackouts apply, according to MLB rules.   Continue to Article

Cincinnati Reds
When a baseball is pitched and it comes off the bat, a player isn't always sure where it's going to land. Sometimes it hangs up there just long enough for a fielder to get to it. Or it looks like it's going to be a fly ball, and instead it hits the cheering crowd. But sometimes the opposite happens, and a no-doubt homer hits the wall and the player is left scrambling for safety. That's what happened to Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig on Tuesday, and he paid the price. [ Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Baseball contest now ] Continue to Article

In the bottom of the sixth inning of Tuesday night's Dodgers-Cincinnati Reds game, Puig came up to bat with one out and men on the corners. Puig sent the first pitch from Reds reliever Daniel Wright high in the air, sailing toward the right field wall. It looked like it might be out of the park, and Puig certainly thought so too, as he took an extra second after he swung to watch it. [ Yasiel Puig's braincramp on the bases frustrates A.J. Ellis ] But Dodger Stadium was able to contain the ball, which knocked off the center of the wall and bounded into the field. One man scored, and Puig ended up on first with a long single. If he hadn't stopped to watch the ball, he very well could have been on second. That didn't end up mattering quite so much a few batters later. Puig, who had advanced to second on a fielders choice, had the chance to score when Reds first baseman Joey Votto couldn't cleanly pick a single off the bat of Howie Kendrick.  He had the chance and he took it, sliding in belly-first and just getting his hand on home plate. His score didn't matter to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, though. He benched Puig before the seventh inning for failing to run out of the box, which resulted in a long single instead of a double. Puig was asked about it after the game, and he had a very Puig response. Quote of the night -- Puig was asked if this was 1st time he'd been pulled from a game: "I don't remember. You'd have to ask Don Mattingly" — Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) May 25, 2016 Ladies and gentlemen, I think we've reached Peak Puig. Cincinnati Reds
Scott Kazmir's first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers has thus far been a letdown. Dan Straily's first with the Cincinnati Reds has been a pleasant surprise, and he hasn't even been with the club for two months. Kazmir (3-3, 5.23 ERA), whose career resurgence hit a bit of a snag after being sent from Oakland to Houston in July, had a full-on regression to the crippling control issues that plagued him at the end of his time with Tampa Bay and into his seasons with the Los Angeles Angels in his latest start. Los Angeles Dodgers
Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto hates fun. Either that, or he loves playing the heel in front of opposing fans .  [ Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Baseball contest now ] Either way, Votto's antics were on display Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. During a pitching change in the seventh inning, some of the Dodgers faithful decided to throw a paper airplane onto the playing field. It landed near first base, and Votto wasn't too happy about it.  lol joey votto pic.twitter.com/acM53kPLtG — Jose Rivera (@whoisjoserivera) May 25, 2016 Wow! That is an emphatic stomp. Joey Votto has no time for your fun and entertainment, baseball fans. He's all about being serious. As expected, Votto was roundly booed for the move. Joey Votto just stomped a paper airplane and got booed for it — Brandon H. (@BHIndepMO) May 25, 2016 That wasn't all. You see, Dodgers fans have long memories. The next time Votto came to the plate, the Dodgers faithful decided to give him a new nickname. The fans are chanting "airplane stomper" at Joe Votto. — Andy McCullough (@McCulloughTimes) May 25, 2016 If you listen to the broadcast very closely, you can hear the chant during Votto's ninth inning at-bat. He flies out on the first pitch, so the fans were only able to get through the chant twice, but it still happened! It's not often you hear an "airplane stomper" chant break out at a baseball game, so we're going to give the Dodgers fans points for creativity on this one. They could have just booed Votto again, but they opted for a much better strategy. As far as Votto is concerned, we think he's playing to the crowd a bit. He pulled off a similar move in Philadelphia this season, refusing to toss a ball into the stands and then taunting Phillies fans. Following that contest, Votto said he was just having fun with the opposing crowd. That seems to be the case here, as Votto evens gives a slight smile after the stomp. That smile entices Adrian Gonzalez to make a two-thumbs down gesture at first, getting the crowd more riled up about what they just witnessed. [Elsewhere: Chris Sale went off ... on himself following Tuesday's poor performance ] It's also possible Votto just feeds off the boos. Hey, plenty of wrestlers have made a career out of playing the heel. Maybe Votto will be the first major-league baseball player to employ the strategy.  More MLB coverage from Yahoo Sports: The StewPod: A baseball podcast by Yahoo Sports Subscribe via iTunes or via RSS feed - - - - - - - Chris Cwik is a writer for Big League Stew on Yahoo Sports.
