Adam Wainwright's incremental improvement has been a welcome sign for the St. Louis Cardinals. The right-hander will try to start strong and lead the visiting Cardinals to a three-game sweep over the offensively challenged Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night. After pitching in just seven games last season while recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon, Wainwright (2-3, 6.30 ERA) may have been trying to find his previous All-Star form when he went 1-3 with a 7.16 ERA over his first five starts. While some of the stars of yesteryear have concerns about rules adjustments and the direction Major League Baseball is heading, Cal Ripken Jr. isn’t necessarily one of them. Ripken is excited by all the young talent in the game these days and being able to watch players like Houston shortstop Carlos Correa, Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado, Washington outfielder Bryce Harper and Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout grow at the major league level. [Elsewhere: Roundtable: How many games will the Cubs win this season? ] “It’s wonderful to watch,” Ripken said. “It’s great to market those guys because their skill level is so good and kids want to be them. So it’s a good time for baseball and it’s a good time to put them out there.” Ripken is also working to help the generations of players who will come after today’s young star through the It’s Good Out Here program, working with Major League Baseball to refurbish baseball fields around the nation. Ripken said he would encourage kids these days to play the game or the parts of the game in which they have the most fun. He’s not necessarily a believer that the only way to develop interest in baseball and the skills to play it is through organized nine-on-nine games. [Elsewhere: Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich is an on-base beast ] “We want kids to go out and do what we did when we were kids, experiment,” he said. “Play hot box or pickle. Work on your pitches. You can have a lot of fun with the game of baseball, but it doesn’t have to be nine-on-nine.” More MLB coverage from Yahoo Sports: The StewPod: A baseball podcast by Yahoo Sports Subscribe via iTunes or via RSS feed - - - - - - - Kyle Ringo is a contributing writer to Big League Stew on Yahoo Sports.
