Infield plays can be a number of things. They can be flashy and fun, they can be horrifically bad, or they can just be plain routine. But rarely are infield plays straight-up fake. That's the feat that several Los Angeles Angels players pulled off on Sunday when they played the Seattle Mariners at home.   [ Join a Yahoo Daily Fantasy Baseball contest now ] This magical play can be broken down by what or who you're following on the field. If you followed the baseball, this is what you saw: in the top of the ninth, with Leonys Martin on first base, Ketel Marte hit an easy pop fly out to Mike Trout. Trout caught it and immediately threw it to first baseman C.J. Cron, who was all alone at first and easily doubled off Martin. Why wasn't Martin at first during that routine pop-up? To find that out, you need to follow him during the play. Let's watch Leonys Martin this time. Martin was on first with Marte batting. As soon as Cory Rasmus started his pitching motion, Martin dashed for second base, running with his head down. But with his head down, he completely missed what happened to the baseball after it left Rasmus' hand. Marte hit the ball to the outfield, but Martin had no idea. Here is where the merry tricksters enter the picture. As Martin was running in the basepath, second baseman Cliff Pennington and shortstop Andrelton Simmons mimed a routine double play to fool Martin. Pennington comes at Simmons like he's shoveling the ball to him, and Simmons then takes the fake ball and makes like he's getting ready to fake throw it to first base. That's some pretty good acting. The Angels would go on to lose 9-4 (a walk and a two-run home run followed the aforementioned play), but Pennington and Simmons gave Oscar-worthy performances. After being swept in a series for the first time since July, the Texas Rangers were hoping Cole Hamels would stop the slide in their return home. The Rangers will now look to pound the New York Yankees' struggling rotation and extend their home winning streak to five games Monday night. Texas (10-9) hit .198 and was outscored 13-4 in losing three straight to the Chicago White Sox over the weekend, falling 4-1 Sunday. Continue to Article

Yordano Ventura no longer wears his emotions on his sleeve, the young right-hander for the Kansas City Royals having grown up after his first couple of years in the big leagues. Ventura settled down after a shaky first inning to allow three hits and run over seven, and the Royals pulled away to beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 in the rubber game of their three-game set. ''He's matured,'' said backup catcher Drew Butera, who had a pair of hits while giving Sal Perez the day off. Continue to Article
