St. Louis Blues
Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw was suspended one game and fined $5,000 on Wednesday after a penalty-box outburst in which he used a homophobic slur in a rant directed at game officials. "While Mr. Shaw was both apologetic and remorseful for both the offensive comments and the inappropriate gesture directed at the on-ice officials, he must be held accountable for his actions," said NHL Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. Shaw had been unrepentant on Tuesday night immediately after the Blackhawks' 4-3 playoff loss to the St. Louis Blues, but said Wednesday that a later look at the video of himself was enough for him to know he owed an apology. St. Louis Blues
Vladimir Tarasenko usually takes it easy on Brian Elliott in practice. ''His first shot is always a floater into my glove and he taps me on the pads afterward,'' the St. Louis Blues goalie said Wednesday. Chicago Blackhawks
Andrew Shaw committed an untimely penalty that helped cost the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 4, then did something even more dumb that landed him in hot water with the NHL and the league's fan base. Both incidents are examples of the Blackhawks losing their cool. Now the defending Stanley Cup champions are on the ropes heading into Thursday night's Game 5 in St. Louis, with the rival Blues having a chance to rid themselves of their reputation for faltering in the playoffs.
