Oakland Athletics
Kendall Graveman wasn't the only person to make history at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. Aaron Hicks unleashed a monster throw from the outfield that wasn't just deadly accurate, it was the fastest ever recorded. Let's set the scene. The Yankees are playing the Oakland Athletics at home, and Yonder Alonso is batting with the bases loaded and one out in top of the fourth inning. The Athletics are leading 3-1, and the Yankees need to stop anyone else from crossing the plate. Nate Eovaldi serves the 1-2 pitch, and Alonso skies it to right.  On first glance, the throw seems pretty good. Hicks positions himself under the falling ball, sets his feet, and once he catches it he wastes no time launching it toward the plate. It's a rocket (it sure is), and it takes just one hop and lands right on target. Brian McCann catches it on the right side of home plate, makes a quick lunge to his left, and tags the runner Danny Valencia for an out. But there's more to that play than meets the eye. MLB.com's Bryan Hoch reported that Statcast registered Hicks' outfield throw at 105.5 mph, the fastest Statcast has ever recorded. Pushed to the second spot on that list is Carlos Gomez's 103.1 mph throw from September 2015. Hoch talked to Hicks about the throw after the game, and he had this to say: "I tried to make a strong throw, accurate throw, trying to be as fast as I can from catch to throw," Hicks said. "When you know your ball is not tailing and you've got that nice four-seam going straight, you know you're going to get a solid hop. I did today." Hicks' Statcast feat didn't stop the Yankees from losing 5-2 to the Athletics, but his throw is still one for the record books. New York Yankees
The first two starters for the Oakland Athletics in this three-game series entered it with 10 career wins, although that didn't prevent them from helping stifle the stumbling New York Yankees. Rich Hill is next in line for the Athletics on Thursday night when they seek to complete their first sweep in the Bronx in 10 years. Oakland (8-7) sent Eric Surkamp and Kendall Graveman to the mound in the first two games and is now within its first sweep at the current Yankee Stadium, having last swept a series in the Bronx from June 9-11, 2006.
